I stopped in my tracks, eyes flashing with irritation.
"What are you doing back here?"
Maybe I sounded too cold, because Jesse Callahan looked awkward.
"Charlotte..."
I smiled faintly and motioned for him to wait by the tractor.
Once Jesse had walked off, I turned to Daniel.
"Talk?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yeah. Let's talk."
We walked over to a quiet spot behind the station.
I broke the silence first.
"What are you here for?"
I didn't know if I was imagining it, but there was something... tender in his eyes.
"Charlotte, come back with me."
I scoffed.
"Back to what? So I can keep being your dirty little secret?"
"Daniel, you do realize what you're doing is illegal, right?"
"One report from me, and you can kiss your promotion goodbye."
Daniel flinched, guilt written all over his face.
"Charlotte, I know I messed up. I know I let you down."
"But give me time, I swear I'll make things right—for you and for Liam."
"When?"
"A year? Two? Or are we signing up for another eight-year wait?"
"It won't take that long. I promise, just come back with me and I'll fix everything soon."
His eyes lit up with desperate hope.
I stared at him and gave a little smile.
"Sure. Go write up the marriage papers. Right now."
His face froze.
The light in his eyes died.
His voice dropped to a hoarse whisper.
"Charlotte… you know I need time…"
I smiled again, then turned to leave.
I threw one last sentence over my shoulder.
"If you ever bother me or Liam again, I will report you."
Daniel's face twisted, his lips moved, like he wanted to say something.
But in the end, he just stood there.
Didn't follow.
Didn't fight.
Selfishness was always his true nature.
The sky blazed with the colors of sunset.
And for a second, I saw her again—
That seventeen-year-old girl,
Waiting under the big tree in front of the old house,
Waiting and waiting,
For her sweetheart to come home safe,
For him to come home a hero.
Later, there were two people waiting under that tree.
I never minded the waiting.
What scared me—
Was not getting the chance to wait at all.
But now?
This time, I'm the one who doesn't want to wait anymore.
On the way back, Jesse Callahan asked me,
"Hey Charlotte, why isn't Daniel riding back with us?"
I smiled casually.
"He got called on a last-minute assignment. Had to head out."
"How long's he gonna be gone?"
"No idea."
Maybe next month.
Maybe forever.
