My brother gasped. "You're finally calling it off?"
"No," I said, my voice cracking.
"He's marrying someone else."
I'd fought my entire family for this man. I'd timed the launch of our company's "True Love" jewelry line to coincide with our vows.
And now, it was all a joke.
After a long pause, my brother said, "Caleb Elowen, then. His family is putting the screws to him to get married. He's... available."
I winced. Caleb was my nemesis. At my engagement party, he'd raised a glass and toasted, "May your marriage be short and your divorce spectacular." Turns out, he was a prophet.
"Ask him," I said. "If he says no, I'll find someone else."
"He won't say no," my brother blurted out, then quickly hung up.
When I got home, I expected Sean to be out all night.
Instead, he was waiting for me with a takeout box.
"Harrow's midnight special," he said. "I bought for you."
I looked at the shrimp dumplings.
Three were missing. One had a bite taken out of it.
Thirty minutes earlier, Raina had posted on Instagram:
"Hubby drove across town just to satisfy my late-night cravings! Best fiancé ever! Mwah!"
The picture was of this exact box.
"Not hungry. Throw it out," I said.
Sean's jaw tightened, but he sat down next to me, sighing dramatically.
"You should have seen Raina today. My parents were awful to her, shaming her because she doesn't have a dowry. She was in tears."
"So? She's broke. Give her your dowry."
The audacity of it made my stomach turn.
"You want me to fund your wedding to another woman?"
There was a time I would have given him anything.
But that was before he shattered every illusion I had.
Ever since Raina came back into the picture, she was his entire world.
He exploded.
"How can you be so selfish? Raina is my closest friend! If you can't make her happy, then I'm not marrying you!"
He slammed the door on his way out.
Fuming, I went for a run in the park.
My phone rang. It was Caleb.
I answered, bracing myself for his usual cold, mocking tone.
"Get on my ship, and you're mine," he said without preamble. "You try to run, and I'll tie you to the mast myself."
His words left me speechless.
Before I could respond, he said, "Mail me a copy of your ID. We're getting the marriage license tomorrow."
He paused. "Before you change your mind."
Caleb, eager? Since when?
I imagined a thousand different ways he would make my life a living hell once we were married. All I said was, "See you at the wedding, Caleb."
Suddenly, Sean was right behind me.
