Caleb snatched it from my hand.
"You harass my wife again, and I'll sue you. She's mine."
Sean raged, "You always wanted her! You took advantage of our fight!"
I hung up.
"He's lost his mind."
Caleb and I avoided each other's eyes, both of our cheeks feeling warm.
He coughed stiffly. "Moping over an ex? Pathetic."
But I saw the flicker of concern in his eyes.
I shot back, "Says the man who's been moping over me for years."
He lunged and covered my mouth with his hand, and we fell into the easy, playful banter we used to share.
Three days later, we held our homecoming banquet, which also served as the anniversary gala for Elleston Corporation.
Sean crashed the party with a horde of reporters, accusing Caleb of being a homewrecker.
The cameras swarmed Caleb, and chaos erupted.
I stepped forward.
"The union between the Elleston and Elowen families is legitimate. Both of us want to get married. There is no 'other woman.'"
"If you continue to spread these defamatory lies, the Elleston legal team will bury you."
The reporters fell silent.
Caleb watched me, a soft, small smile on his lips. My ears burned.
Then, Sean started playing a montage on the main screen:
Me in hospital after a ski accident, with Caleb watching from the doorway.
Me winning a design award, with Caleb cheering silently from the back of the crowd.
My birthday, with Caleb setting off a massive fireworks display across the city.
Year after year, all of it filmed by Sean.
No wonder he thought Caleb was in love with me.
For the first time, Caleb's usual icy composure melted away, and he blushed. It was... kind of adorable.
Sean was still ranting about Caleb's supposed sins.
I cut him off.
"Mr. Jones is already married. He got married before Caleb and I did."
My assistant projected his marriage certificate onto the screen for everyone to see.
Gasps filled the room. "He married his ex first?!"
Sean's face turned purple.
"It was temporary! It was for Raina's mom!" he sputtered. "Cassia knew all about it!"
The crowd wasn't buying it. "Poor Ms. Elleston! Trapped with this psycho!"
"So by his logic, if I die tomorrow, my son has to go marry the Queen of England?"
SMACK!
My mother slapped him.
"After everything Cassia did for you, how could you..."
She clutched her chest, looking devastated.
Caleb steadied her as I joined them.
Sean stood alone, isolated.
Normal people could see right through his delusions.
He was the only one who believed his own lies.
Sean still refused to give up. He pointed at Caleb: "So what? Caleb seduced my wife. That's a fact!"
I corrected him coldly: "Watch your words. Your wife is Raina. Don't slander my husband."
Caleb stepped forward: "Quietly admiring someone isn't a crime, Mr. Jones. My conscience is clear."
"Exactly!" The reporters murmured in agreement.
Who could condemn silent devotion? Sean had trapped himself, pushing away the one who loved him.
Seeing the crowd turn against him, Sean snapped.
He grabbed my arm: "You know I love you! Raina and I... it was a mistake! I only married her for her mother."
I pulled my hand back, staring at him in silence.
He wailed: "It was filial duty! Would you let a single mother die in unrest? You rich people are so heartless. You’ll never understand us!"
A woman suddenly charged out of the crowd.
A blade flashed. Caleb shoved me out of the way just in time.
The knife sank into his back. Blood bloomed across his shirt.
