After the honeymoon, Caleb and I settled into our life in California.
I ran Elleston Corp, and he ran Elowen Enterprises.
Months later, as I working at the company, my assistant said there's a man downstairs who wanted to see me.
I refused
"It's Sean. He says you owe him a promise."
In the meeting room, Sean placed a "love lock" on the table.
I recognized it instantly. The padlock we'd clipped to that lovers' bridge three years ago.
Bathed in twilight's glow, he smiled.
"Remember? We promised we could each ask for one wish. I'm cashing mine in now."
"You dare?"
"Yes!"
"Give me a chance. Even if you won't divorce Caleb. Just be with me."
I traced the lock with my finger, a small smirk on my face.
"You should be asking Raina. This lock has her name on it."
Sean snatched it back, his face a mask of shock.
He'd forgotten. There wasn't my name.
After his betrayal, I'd gone back to all the spots we went before.
Finding the lock.
Ridiculous.
"In the happiest year of our relationship, you engraved Raina's name on our lock."
"You never loved either of us, Sean," I said. "You just want what you can't have. When you had me, you wanted Raina. Now that you've lost me, you want me back."
"You only love yourself."
I walked out of the room.
I could hear his shattered sobs echoing behind me.
All I could think was, I wonder what Caleb is making for dinner tonight?
Probably that braised fish I'd mentioned craving.
But we ended up skipping dinner. Because I was too busy throwing up.
At the hospital, Caleb was beaming like a little kid. "We're having a baby!"
In the hallway, we passed Sean. Raina was on her knees, begging him not to make her go through with the abortion.
He signed the form without a trace of emotion.
"Unwanted things should be thrown away. I won't taint the world with her blood." He looked at her coldly. "You told Cassia about us. I had told you I could give you everything, except the position of Mrs. Jones."
"This is your punishment. I'll never forgive you."
I coughed lightly.
He turned back, shocked.
Seeing my ultrasound photos in my hand., his lips moved, but no sound came out. "Congratulations."
There was no joy in his eyes. No hate. Just a hollow, red-rimmed emptiness.
Raina was wailing.
Mrs. Hawthorn showed up and slammed her head against the wall. Sean didn't even flinch.
I doubt he ever found peace. His hatred for them probably consumed him.
As for me? I had already moved on.
The past was just ashes.
I had Caleb. Our baby. A future.
And that was more than enough.
