The day she received the signed divorce agreement, a smile of relief finally appeared on Ellie's face.
Soon, just one month of the mandatory cooling-off period, and then it would be over.
For the rest of her life, she and James would have nothing to do with each other.
A week later, she received a call from the family estate.
It was time for the annual family banquet, and as the eldest daughter-in-law, her attendance was mandatory.
Initially, Ellie didn't want to go—after all, she and James were about to divorce.
The less they saw each other, the better. But remembering the Foster family's financial support over the years, she ultimately decided to attend.
At the Foster family estate, the grand hall was brilliantly lit, with crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, casting a dazzling glow.
Elegant men and women holding champagne flutes gathered in small groups, exchanging pleasantries with bright smiles and cheerful voices.
Ellie, dressed in a floor-length gown, smiled and nodded politely to relatives as she passed by.
Eventually, she gracefully ascended the stairs to greet Grandfather Foster and James's parents in another hall.
By the end of it all, her face ached from smiling.
Before the formal dinner began, she planned to bypass the main building and rest in the side wing. That's when a voice called out from behind.
"Ellie."
She turned to see James standing in the shadow of the lights, his expression unreadable.
"Ellie, you're not a three-year-old child anymore."
"Not coming home for so many days, not responding to messages, not answering calls—what would people think of the Foster family if they knew you'd run away from home like this?"
"Today, you're moving back home with me. That's final."
James's tone was like he was scolding a child throwing a tantrum.
He had always been emotionally stable, and today was no exception.
Casual, composed, confident.
Every sentence was logical, every word devoid of emotion.
Perhaps because he never had any feelings for her to begin with.
On the surface it sounded like advice, but between the lines, it was a warning.
Her long lashes concealed the irony and darkness in her eyes.
Moving back home? They had already signed the divorce agreement, yet he still didn't know.
Didn't know they were no longer a family.
Ellie was about to speak when the butler rushed over and called James away.
She let out a long sigh.
It was too late to retreat to the side wing now. She might as well go to the pool to clear her head.
Just as she reached the poolside, a hand blocked her path.
"Ellie."
She looked up to find Victoria glaring at her, eyes full of warning.
"Didn't we agree you wouldn't interfere anymore? What are you trying to do now? I knew someone like you wouldn't easily give up the position of Mrs. Foster!"
Ellie maintained her gentle, calm tone. "The divorce papers are already signed. How could I possibly still be interfering with anything?"
"Don't worry, I no longer care about being Mrs. Foster. Once the cooling-off period ends, I'll be gone."
With that, she turned to leave without giving Victoria another glance.
Victoria stomped her foot and was about to follow when a sharp scream came from the slope above.
"Look out!"
They both looked up, their faces instantly paling.
Two children on roller skates were hurtling down the slope, heading straight for them!
"Watch out!"
Two splashes echoed as both women fell into the pool.
The ice-cold water instantly engulfed them.
Ellie was afraid of water. The more she struggled to swim toward the shore, the more her limbs flailed in panic.
She kept sinking deeper.
Then she desperately broke the surface, catching a glimpse of James rushing over and diving from the edge into the pool.
She didn't call for help, but swallowed several mouthfuls of water as she thrashed.
Her head felt increasingly heavy, and breathing became more and more difficult.
And then, James jumped into the water and without hesitation swam straight toward Victoria!
She wasn't surprised anymore, just heartbroken.
No matter when or where.
His choice was always Victoria.
She was always the one left behind.
The sounds around her grew fainter, and her arms gradually lost their strength.
Finally, she slowly sank to the bottom of the pool...
