Three days before the wedding.
Since James was finally having their wedding ceremony, the Foster estate once again buzzed with activity.
The servants were so busy that nobody noticed a figure slip quietly into the fitting room.
When Victoria arrived, Ellie handed her the tablet.
"Our figures are similar, so the wedding dress was made based on my measurements. You can try it on now, and if anything doesn't fit right, just mark the changes on the tablet. I'll pass them to the designer for alterations."
Victoria looked at her, confused. "Isn't this your wedding?"
"The day James is holding our ceremony," Ellie said softly, "happens to be when our divorce cooling-off period ends. I'll be able to take the certificate and leave."
"The wedding can't go on without a bride, and you're the perfect choice. After all, you're the one he's always wanted to marry. I wish you both happiness."
As she spoke these words, Ellie's eyes showed no trace of regret or sadness.
Only then did Victoria truly understand that Ellie really didn't love James anymore.
Two days before the wedding.
Ellie was freshening up in the bathroom while James sat on the couch handling documents.
A clear "ding" from a text message broke the silence.
James glanced at her phone, and a message immediately caught his eye.
[You have successfully purchased a ticket for UA1082 from Logan International Airport, October 1st, 09:00 AM. Passenger name: Ellie Reynolds...]
Just as he was about to pick up the phone for a closer look, Ellie pushed open the bathroom door, walking toward him while drying her hair.
He asked, "We're about to have our wedding. Why did you buy a plane ticket?"
Her hand paused momentarily, but her expression quickly returned to normal.
"What plane ticket? You must have seen wrong. Probably just spam."
He nodded slightly, seemingly unconcerned.
After the lights went out, they lay in bed, back to back.
One quickly fell into deep sleep, while the other remained awake until dawn.
One day before the wedding.
Ellie took out the diary she'd been keeping since their wedding night.
She flipped through it page by page.
"October 1, 2019: I got married today to the man I love, but my groom flew overseas overnight just to see his true love in a wedding dress."
Beside the entry were wrinkles from dried tears. She gently touched them before moving to the next.
"December 30, 2020: This is the first time someone's with me for New Year's, but I'm not happy at all. The place he brought me to is his true love's favorite spot. Did he want to welcome the new year with me, or was he reminiscing about her? Probably the latter."
"October 1, 2021: Our wedding anniversary, and I'm still unhappy. The restaurant he chose was where he once confessed to Victoria."
"August 29, 2024: His true love has returned to the country. I know it's time for me to leave..."
The thick diary recorded all her emotions over these five years, documenting a marriage that was doomed to fail from the start.
But, it didn't matter now. Today, it would finally end.
She picked up her pen and wrote one final entry on the last page.
"September 31, 2024: I've decided to leave. James, I don't want you anymore."
Then she placed the diary alongside her abortion certificate and divorce agreement in the bedside drawer.
Rising, she took one last look at the festive room.
With a slight smile, her eyes filled with longing for freedom.
As the clock struck, she vanished into the vast night.
The day of the wedding.
The wedding hall was softly adorned with flowers and white gauze. Sunlight filtered through stained-glass windows, casting a dappled glow that added warmth and romance to this sacred moment.
James stood at the end of the rose-petal aisle.
This was supposed to be just a makeup ceremony.
Yet as he stood on the stage, he realized he actually felt anticipation.
He'd never seen Ellie in a wedding dress.
Just imagining her walking toward him in white lace, cheeks flushed, made his heart inexplicably race.
To the music, the bride approached him in her flowing white veil, lifting her dress as she walked.
"Miss Ellie Reynolds, do you take Mr. Foster to be your lawfully wedded husband? To love, comfort, honor and keep him, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others, keeping yourself only unto him, so long as you both shall live?"
The bride shyly nodded.
"I do."
"Mr. James Foster, do you take Miss Reynolds to be your lawfully wedded wife? To love, comfort, honor and keep her, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others, keeping yourself only unto her, so long as you both shall live?"
He nodded. "I do."
Amid applause, the priest solemnly declared them husband and wife.
The corners of James's eyes crinkled with a genuine smile.
But when he tried to lift the veil for the kiss, the bride clutched it tightly, refusing to let go.
Thinking she was just shy, he bent down and gently coaxed his little wife, "Ellie, don't be afraid."
After a long hesitation, the bride finally released her grip, allowing him to slowly lift the veil...
