The moment he saw that face, his pupils trembled slightly.
Victoria?!
James stared at her face in disbelief. After recovering from the shock, he composed himself, his smile instantly disappearing as he quickly lowered the bride's veil.
He looked apologetically toward the guests.
"Sorry, the bride is a bit shy."
Everyone gave knowing looks, understanding the situation, and stopped pressing the issue.
The reception began shortly after. Normally, the bride and groom would change into formal attire and come down to toast the guests.
But Mr. and Mrs. Foster waited and waited without seeing the couple appear.
Mrs. Foster assumed the newlyweds needed some private time together, so she decided to wait a bit longer. But as the reception was about to end, they still hadn't shown up.
She turned to a servant standing nearby.
"Go upstairs and remind the master and madam."
The servant nodded and headed upstairs, knocking on the door of the resting room.
"Sir, madam, the master and mistress are asking you to change and come downstairs soon."
The room remained silent for quite a while before the man's voice finally came through.
"Got it. You can go now."
Once the servant left, James looked at the woman before him with furrowed brows.
"Why is it you?"
Victoria's eyes reddened. "Why can't it be me?"
"James, are you really going through with this wedding to Ellie?"
"If not for everything that happened back then, I would be the one marrying you today."
"I'm just taking back what was supposed to be mine."
Broken sobs filled his ears, but watching the woman cry into her hands, for the first time, he had no patience to comfort her.
He pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Victoria, now isn't the time for this."
"You need to understand, this wedding isn't like others. This is the first time I've publicly announced my marriage. It's significant. Ellie's and my names have already made headlines in every newspaper and news outlet. The whole city knows she's the bride. Suddenly switching brides now—if word got out, the consequences would be unimaginable."
"I'm saying this for your own good."
But Victoria didn't want to hear any of it. To her, his refusal to publicly switch brides simply meant he didn't love her enough.
"James, if you truly love me, announce the bride change right now!"
"Otherwise, I'm leaving!"
She rose to leave, but he quickly blocked the door.
Then she smiled inwardly, thinking he couldn't bear to let her go.
But his next words slapped her in the face.
"You can't leave yet."
Victoria's face darkened.
"What do you mean?"
James explained.
"If you go out now and someone sees you, the consequences won't be good."
"Victoria, just stay in here for now. We'll talk after everyone leaves."
With that, he turned away without looking at her again, closing the door behind him.
Leaving her standing alone.
Victoria's hands gradually tightened into white-knuckled fists, her manicured nails digging into her palms as rage bubbled up inside her. A muscle twitched in her jaw as she fought to contain her fury.
She had always thought becoming James's wife would be easy, given how much he loved her and how Ellie had created such perfect conditions for her.
Now that she had finally replaced Ellie in the wedding, all he needed to do was lift her veil in front of everyone, and they would all know she was his true bride.
And surely James loved her enough to explain everything for her sake.
But reality had slapped her hard across the face.
Not only had he quickly lowered the veil after seeing her face, but before she could even react, he had firmly gripped her waist and escorted her upstairs.
And now he wouldn't even let her go downstairs to make a scene.
Victoria looked at herself in the mirror. The face she had once been so proud of was no longer youthful.
After her failed marriage, the men she pursued no longer considered her wife material.
Now she could only cling desperately to James to secure another wealthy marriage.
So why would she obediently follow James's words?
Downstairs, seeing James come down alone, Mrs. Foster asked with concern:
"Why are you alone? Where's Ellie?"
James hid his displeasure and calmly replied.
"Mom, you know Ellie fell into the water and is pregnant. She's not feeling well, so I told her to stay in the room and rest."
Mrs. Foster finally relaxed.
"Then go toast the guests first."
He nodded and had just picked up a wine glass to head toward the reception when a tearful voice rang out behind him.
"James!"
