The sudden cry caused all the guests to look up, even Mr. and Mrs. Foster raised their heads toward the stairs.
James turned toward the source of the voice.
There stood Victoria in a white wedding dress at the top of the staircase, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.
Mrs. Foster's face instantly darkened. Just as she was about to signal the security guards to drag Victoria away—
Victoria rushed down the stairs, her dress trailing behind her, and threw herself into James's arms.
"James, I was supposed to be the one marrying you today!"
"Why wouldn't you let me come down to toast with you? Is it because you don't love me?"
With just those two simple sentences, the guests immediately understood what was happening.
Whispers began to circulate through the crowd.
James could no longer maintain his composure. He grabbed her hand firmly and said in a low voice:
"Victoria, now is not the time for your tantrum."
Victoria completely ignored him and continued loudly:
"I know you never liked Ellie. Otherwise, why would you abandon her to go abroad with me each time?"
"You helped me with my divorce, picked me up from the airport, and even let me stay in your villa."
"If you didn't love me, why would you care about me so much?"
She tugged at the wedding dress she was wearing.
"Look, this wedding dress is even in my size."
"So you do love me, don't you?"
You idiot! Mrs. Foster cursed inwardly while maintaining her smile.
She signaled to the butler standing nearby.
The butler walked gracefully to the front of the guests.
"I apologize, but that young lady is mentally unwell and is having an episode. Please forgive the disturbance."
He then gestured toward the exit.
The guests, understanding this was a family matter, gradually departed, though they carried the juicy gossip with them.
As for what they might say afterward, the Foster family could do nothing about it.
After the last guest had left, Mrs. Foster finally dropped her forced smile and slapped Victoria hard across the face.
"You slut!"
"Mom!"
Although James knew Victoria was in the wrong, seeing his beloved being slapped by his mother made his heart ache. He stepped forward to shield her.
"James..." Victoria held her swollen cheek as tears streamed down her face. As if realizing her mistake, she tried to hold back her sobs.
"I know what I did was wrong. I just love you so much, that's why I..." Before she could finish, she lowered her head and began crying again.
Her vulnerable state made his heart soften even more. He pulled her into his arms.
"It's okay. I'm not blaming you."
Mrs. Foster resisted the urge to roll her eyes and said coldly:
"I don't care what your intentions were, but you should never have ruined someone else's wedding."
Victoria's face paled as she peeked out from James's embrace.
"Mrs. Foster, I—"
"Don't call me Mrs. Foster!"
While James was comforting Victoria, the butler handed a phone to Mrs. Foster.
When she saw the news headline, Mrs. Foster lost all composure.
She yanked Victoria out of her son's arms and slapped her hard again.
"Victoria, you shameless woman!"
"Back then, you took my money to leave the country and promised never to return. Yet here you are, not even five years later, seducing my son and causing all this trouble. Are you deliberately trying to ruin us?"
James caught the key phrase in his mother's words and looked at Victoria in shock.
"What money did you take from my mother?"
"James, I didn't take any money!" Victoria quickly denied.
Mrs. Foster ignored her and thrust the phone in front of her son.
"Look what this shameless woman has done!"
When James saw the news headline, he looked up at Victoria in disbelief.
"Victoria, what is this about?"
Although the bride-switching incident was witnessed by all the guests, they knew it was a private Foster family matter. They might gossip within their circles, but they wouldn't spread it publicly.
Yet now, several trending topics about the Foster family's bride-switch had exploded on social media!
Mrs. Foster couldn't think of anyone besides Victoria who would do such a thing!
Victoria looked guilty. Before coming downstairs, she had feared James wouldn't acknowledge their marriage, so she had sent the story to the paparazzi and paid for several trending topics on social media.
She thought this would force them to accept her as the bride to save face.
But reality hadn't gone according to her plan.
Seeing her reaction, James closed his eyes in pain.
"Why, Victoria...?"
Although he had decided to renew his vows with Ellie as a way to make up for his recent neglect, the person he truly loved had always been Victoria.
Except for the wedding and the baby, he was willing to give her anything.
But he never imagined she would broadcast the bride-switching incident to force his hand.
He couldn't even imagine how badly Foster Enterprises' stock would plummet.
Then he opened his eyes and looked at the woman before him, feeling for the first time that she was a complete stranger.
Victoria anxiously grabbed his hand, her eyes full of uncertainty and fear.
"James, let me explain. I didn't want to do this, I just love you so much..."
