When James regained consciousness, he realized he had been taken to the hospital.
"Ellie..."
But all he heard in response was Mrs. Foster's cold snort.
"Ellie isn't here. It's just me."
"Where's Ellie? Is she okay? Did anything happen to her?"
He struggled to sit up, but Mrs. Foster quickly pushed him back down.
"Hey, hey, don't move! You still have a head injury."
"Don't worry, Ellie is fine. She was just a bit shocked and is resting at home."
James finally relaxed back onto the bed, accidentally touching his wound in the process.
While readjusting his pillow, Mrs. Foster remarked sarcastically, "Hurts, doesn't it? When Ellie fell into the water, she suffered several times worse than you are now!"
Remembering Ellie's pale face when she was rescued, Mrs. Foster felt increasingly distressed for her. She gave James a few hard slaps on his arm to vent her frustration.
"Seriously, I can't believe you! Instead of saving your own wife, you had to save that shameless woman!"
"Are you satisfied now? You've driven your wife away with your behavior!"
Listening to Mrs. Foster's complaints, James felt increasingly miserable.
He finally understood Ellie's pain.
He couldn't imagine how desperate she must have felt at that time.
His grip on the blanket tightened.
For the next several days, only Mrs. Foster came to bring him food and take care of him.
He wanted to see Ellie many times but couldn't bring himself to ask.
Finally, the day before his discharge, he couldn't hold back any longer and was about to ask Mrs. Foster.
But she cut him off with an eye roll.
"I know what you're going to say."
"But forget it. The old man was worried about Ellie being shocked, so he's having her rest quietly at home."
"Besides, she's not your anything now. Why should she come see you?"
"But she's still my wife..." Before he could finish, Mrs. Foster gave him a hard knock on the head.
"What wife? You two have divorce papers!"
"But I never agreed to it!"
Mrs. Foster rolled her eyes dramatically.
Later, she had someone investigate the divorce matter and discovered that her son had signed the papers while drunk, tricked by that shameless Victoria.
"Who told you to drink so much alcohol?"
"You deserved it!"
On the day he was discharged and returned home, he saw Ellie again in the main hall.
They stood in awkward silence until she, perhaps feeling that this wasn't right since he had saved her, finally asked, "Are you feeling better?"
He nodded, about to speak when his aunt pulled him in front of Mr. Foster Senior.
The old man, leaning on his cane, looked at him.
"How are you feeling?"
He sat down nearby and replied, "Nothing serious anymore."
His aunt then smiled and said, "If you're better, I'm going to steal your wife away!"
James turned to look at his aunt. "What are you planning, Auntie?"
She walked over to Ellie and put an arm around her. "Ellie and I agreed that once you're discharged, I'll take her to the hot springs at the foot of the snow mountain for a few days."
Mrs. Foster, sitting beside him, poured him a cup of water.
"After all, staying in the old house can get boring. Young people should go out and explore more."
James felt a wave of disappointment. He had just returned and wanted to spend time with Ellie, but she was already leaving.
Perhaps sensing his disappointment, his aunt asked, "Why don't you come with us?"
The old man wasn't very supportive. "Going right after being discharged isn't good for your health."
James looked at Ellie, but she had an indifferent expression.
He turned back to his grandfather. "It's okay, Grandpa. I've been in the hospital for over half a month and I'm bored too. It would be nice to go out and relax."
After discussing it for a while, his aunt declared, "That's settled then! You'll come with us."
The three of them soon set off on their journey.
Throughout the trip, his aunt chattered about their upcoming itinerary for the next few days.
James and Ellie occasionally responded to her, but his aunt still noticed something off.
Then she leaned in between them, looking puzzled. "You two are acting so strange."
"You're husband and wife, yet you're not talking to each other at all. You're only talking to me."
No one except Mr. and Mrs. Foster knew about their divorce.
The two of them froze, not knowing how to explain.
His aunt clapped her hands in sudden realization. "I get it! Ellie, are you still upset about the bride swap? No worries, we'll punish James by making him carry all our luggage!"
The three continued their journey with playful banter and soon arrived at the pre-booked homestay.
After receiving the room cards from the front desk, they went to find their rooms.
His aunt waved at them with a smile. "See you both in a bit."
With that, she closed her door.
They then opened the door to their own room.
But upon seeing what was inside, they both froze in place.
