His aunt had booked them a room with one large bed.
Ellie immediately turned to leave.
"I'll go ask the front desk for another room."
James quickly blocked her path.
"My aunt can't keep secrets. If she finds out we're not staying in the same room, she'll definitely tell Grandpa when we get back."
Without even looking at him, she tried to walk past.
"Ellie!"
She finally raised her eyes to meet his, filled with nothing but detachment and indifference.
"So what? Everyone knows I'm angry about you swapping brides. It makes sense that we wouldn't stay together. What does it matter if Grandpa finds out? This whole situation was caused by you anyway. Besides, what divorced couple shares a room? You might not care, but I find it disgusting."
The man's throat tightened, unable to respond despite wanting to say something.
She didn't bother looking at him again and walked straight to the front desk to book another room.
When his aunt came out wearing her hot spring attire with a blanket draped over her shoulders, she saw them emerging from different rooms.
A flash of confusion crossed her eyes, but she seemed to think of something and decided to keep quiet.
His aunt had booked them a private hot spring, with only a fence separating the men's and women's sections.
After immersing her entire body in the warm water, Ellie let out a long, relieved sigh.
Then his aunt put an arm around her shoulders and began chatting casually.
Somehow, their conversation drifted to the topic of James.
In the adjacent pool, James was washing his shoulders when he heard his name mentioned. He immediately froze.
"Ellie, haven't you thought about giving that guy a chance to make amends?"
His aunt had been living abroad and only returned for Mr. Foster Senior's birthday celebration. All she knew about their situation was the bride swap and the lost baby.
Though it was indeed all James's fault, she noticed that Ellie showed no interest in giving him a chance to make amends.
After all, he was her nephew, and she wanted to speak up for him.
Without opening her eyes, Ellie gave a vague answer after a long pause.
"We'll see about that later."
The man in the opposite pool heard this and gave a bitter smile.
Seeing this, his aunt didn't press further.
After all, it was a matter between husband and wife.
After the hot spring, the three of them went to a restaurant at the foot of the snow mountain for dinner.
Since it was a buffet, they each took trays and selected dishes they liked.
James walked behind Ellie, constantly recommending various delicacies to her.
For each recommendation, without even looking, she immediately refused.
"I'm allergic."
"I don't like that."
"Not interested."
The disappointment in his eyes grew more evident.
His aunt, unable to watch this continue, gave him a hard knock on the head while Ellie was walking to the table.
"What are you doing, James Foster!"
"Don't tell me that after five years of marriage, you don't even know what foods she avoids!"
James's lips curled into a helpless, bitter smile, his eyes reflecting endless pain and desolation.
What could he possibly know?
During those five years, she had always accommodated his preferences.
Whether dining out or cooking at home, she always catered to his tastes.
And what about him? He had reserved all his patience for Victoria.
He could clearly list all of Victoria's likes and allergies, but couldn't name a single thing that Ellie enjoyed.
This meal, tasted utterly bland to him.
After dinner, the three had planned to go to the ski resort owned by the homestay.
However, they were informed that due to weather conditions, the ski resort was temporarily closed.
They had no choice but to stay at the homestay for entertainment.
His aunt had initially wanted to take them to the homestay's bar, but she was called away by a phone call.
Under the dim lights, only the two of them remained at the table.
Ellie stopped pretending. She took off her jacket and headed toward the dance floor.
He then realized she was wearing only a thin, almost translucent camisole underneath. The sheer fabric perfectly accentuated her curves.
She was naturally stunning – a small, palm-sized face with flawless features, and eyes as clear and glistening as a lake, seemingly able to hold all the stars in the sky.
Her beauty drew countless gazes, fixating on her.
This feeling undoubtedly irritated him, as if a precious treasure of his was being coveted.
Then James strode to her side, ready to drape the jacket he had taken off over her shoulders.
But with a twist of her waist, she avoided his attempt to cover her.
"Ellie Reynolds!"
