Ellie broke into a tearful smile but said nothing more.
As she stood to leave, Grandfather Foster gave her a large red envelope, repeating the same words he'd said when she first arrived.
"My dear, stay safe and well."
Her eyes welled up once again.
The moment the door opened, James, who had been sitting outside, jumped to his feet. Seeing her reddened eyes, concern flashed across his face.
Just as he was about to speak, a stern voice came from inside.
"You ungrateful boy, get in here!"
The door was firmly closed once more.
"Grandpa."
James was about to sit down beside Grandfather Foster when the old man's face darkened.
"Sit? Who said you could sit? Kneel down!"
James didn't dare refuse and knelt directly in front of his grandfather.
The old man sat up straighter, looking at him intently.
"I've known about your divorce from Ellie for a long time."
"Grandpa?" He looked up at his grandfather in surprise. "You knew?"
"Hmph, you're just like your father when he was chasing your mother."
The difference was that between his father and mother, it had only been a small misunderstanding. Plus, his father had the good sense to explain himself promptly, which allowed them to reconcile.
Unlike James, who had clearly mistreated Ellie for five whole years.
"If you didn't love her, why didn't you say so from the beginning? Instead, you drove her away and only then started to regret it."
"Now you want to win her back? You must be dreaming!"
A terrible premonition rose in James's heart, making it race as if something precious was flying away from him forever.
"You neglected her for five years, made her sleep alone for five years. Now you've suffered a minor injury, experienced a little hardship, and you think that's enough to win her back?"
"Ellie is too good for you. She shouldn't get back together with someone like you."
"No, that's not true, Grandpa."
He fumbled for words, desperate to explain.
"I truly realize my mistakes. I genuinely want to make amends. I really do love her..."
"James Foster." His grandfather used his full name seriously for the first time. "Your realization comes too late."
"I've already decided, and I've told your parents—we're going to make Ellie my honorary granddaughter and your parents will recognize her as their goddaughter."
Like a bolt from the blue, his mind went completely blank.
"So from now on, Ellie is your sister!"
Grandfather Foster was known for his unwavering decisions.
Soon, news of James and Ellie's divorce spread throughout the entire city.
Just when people were processing that bombshell, another shocking announcement left them reeling.
The Foster family was adopting Ellie as their goddaughter!
Mrs. Foster held Ellie's hand with deep emotion.
"When I first met you, I wanted to make you my goddaughter, but that foolish son of mine beat me to it. But it's not too late now."
Ellie smiled in response, and the warm mother-daughter relationship made others envious.
In the corner, James stared at her, his face etched with pain and unwillingness.
Why?
Why had things turned out this way?
He had been so close to winning his wife back.
Now, he couldn't help but cover his face as he broke down in tears.
After the celebration ended, Ellie happily carried the gifts everyone had given her back to her room.
Just as she was about to open the door, she was pulled into an embrace that reeked of alcohol.
The gifts in her arms clattered to the floor. She was about to call for help when the person behind her covered her mouth.
"Ellie, it's me."
With a click, the room light came on.
Looking at the man before her, Ellie responded with cold mockery.
"It's so late. What business does brother have with me?"
Hearing the word "brother," James seemed to snap. He pinned her against the wall, his eyes reddened.
"Please, Ellie, don't call me that..."
"I was your husband!"
"You're my wife, not my sister!"
"Slap!" Ellie's hand connected with his face. "You're drunk. What nonsense are you talking about? I am your sister."
With that, she pushed him away, attempting to force him out.
In the next moment, a passionate kiss landed on her lips.
