"Victoria, need a break?"
"Sure." I sat up, suddenly hyper-aware of our nakedness—him just as exposed as I was. He lifted the edge of the towel, gently wiping between my thighs. Heat rushed to my cheeks, but his quiet focus steadied me. Then, with practiced ease, he swapped the damp towel for a fresh one.
My eyes trailed over his lean, sculpted body, lingering where his arousal stood firm.
Even after my own release, the sight sent a fresh pulse of want through me. I swallowed hard, fingers itching to reach for him—when a shrill ringtone shattered the moment.
"Victoria, your phone," he murmured. "Want me to grab it?"
I nodded, and he fished it from my bag.
Richard. After last night, I was pretty sure he no longer saw me as just his daughter-in-law.
I answered. His voice was thin, strained. "Victoria… I'm at the hospital. Can you come?"
My stomach dropped. "What happened?"
"My stomach—collapsed from the pain. Waited for you all afternoon… had to come alone."
"I'm leaving now!"
The call doused the heat between my thighs. He was my father-in-law, sure, but we'd crossed that line long ago.
I dressed in a frenzy, brushing off the masseur's confused questions. Isabella was already gone, so I tossed an apology to the receptionist before flagging down a cab.
By the time I reached the hospital, it was past ten. Richard lay pale against the stark white sheets, and the sight of him alone twisted something in my chest.
"Are you okay?" I rushed to his side, voice cracking.
"Better now," he whispered, offering a weak smile.
I poured him water, refusing to let him hold the cup myself. His face flushed as he drank, clumsy in his haste, droplets spilling onto the sheets.
When I leaned in to dab them dry, he reached to stop me—but I caught the faint tremor in his arm. Was he still… affected by me?
The way his gaze darted away, shy and flustered, made him look like a teenager with a crush.
A thought struck me. "Do you need to use the restroom?"
A beat of silence. Then, a reluctant nod.
I grabbed the bedpan.
"No—" He stiffened. "I'll go to the toilet."
"Why?" I tilted my head, studying him.
