I listened quietly to Nydia's lawyer, then gave a small smile.
I looked at Nydia, the disappointment clear in my eyes. "So this is all okay to you, huh? Let me make it simple. These are my lines in the sand. I'm getting this divorce. That's final."
Nydia looked like her heart had just broken in two.
Divorce suits were hard to win unless the marriage involved abuse or serious, unresolvable conflict. Cheating alone usually led to one party being asked to tolerate it, and the other to say sorry and promise to do better.
But for me, once was enough. I'd never believe in second chances for this kind of thing.
After the hearing, Nydia was waiting outside. She turned to face me and said softly, "Emerson, I just don't want a divorce."
While I was gone, something inside her felt missing—like a space no one else could fill.
I had wiped out everything that connected us—photos, keepsakes, even love letters.
She searched both the old house and the new one, but there wasn't a trace of me left.
If she didn't remember our past, she might've thought I was never real.
"Emerson, I just made a small mistake. Why are you punishing me like this?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Tears streamed down her face.
She was crying—really crying—in front of me.
I said quietly, "Because you don't love me. I never expected you to feel exactly the same way, but at the very least, I shouldn't matter less than Jefferson."
That kind of thing was hard for anyone to swallow.
"You even erased me from our wedding photo and put him in my place. What else is there to say?" I asked.
I felt like a fool. Four years, and it meant nothing.
I closed my eyes and told her, "As long as you keep refusing, I'll keep pushing. I'll show up to court every day if I have to."
She looked stunned and completely drained.
After that first hearing, I didn't see Nydia again.
I ended up selling the old house in Ecirie City to a young couple. With that money, I paid the deposit for the house in Jaford City. Once everything here was settled, I planned to pay it off in full.
It didn't make sense to keep delaying the divorce, so I told the judge to keep the pressure on Nydia.
Since she didn't have my contact info, Nydia kept sending long, emotional emails.
At the second hearing, the lawyers argued like crazy for over half an hour. Neither side was willing to budge.
Joseph tried to get us to meet in the middle, but I didn't move.
Nydia dropped a bombshell. "I'm pregnant," she said.
I stared at her and froze. I was sure she was just joking.
Even Joseph looked confused.
I couldn't believe a word of it. I couldn't even remember the last time we'd slept together.
I rubbed my forehead, trying to think.
Even Nydia's lawyer looked stunned.
I stared at her belly in utter disbelief.
Nydia pulled out an ultrasound report and said, "I'm three months pregnant.
"If you still want a divorce, I'll abort it."
I let out a bitter laugh. "Go ahead. Then we can wrap this up even faster."
Caught off guard by my words, Nydia slammed the table and snapped, "Emerson, you'd really walk away from your own child?"
She was breathing hard, her whole body shaking with anger.
I didn't love her anymore, and she couldn't handle that.
I looked at Joseph and said, "I don't believe her. I want a test to confirm."
