Standing in the doorway was my husband, James Woods—the newly minted CEO of Woods Corporation. His eyes scanned the room before landing on me, battered and bleeding on the floor. His face twisted into a perfect imitation of shock.
"Eleanor! What happened? Who did this to you?"
I wiped the blood from my brow, pushing myself up with effort.
"Cut the act, James." My voice was glacial. "This was your doing, wasn't it?"
A flicker of surprise crossed his face before he schooled his expression. He took a deliberate step back, aligning himself with .
"Don't blame me for this," he said, shameless as ever. "If you want to point fingers, look in the mirror. You were never enough."
"The Woods family leads the four major families in San Diego now. If we want to expand, we need Los Angeles. The Kings are the obvious choice."
I stared at him, any lingering warmth in my heart snuffed out.
"You never loved me, did you? This marriage was just another business deal."
I'd stayed out of company affairs, but James had insisted I sign this contract personally. A setup. He wanted me gone without staining his own hands. Pathetic.
James barked out a laugh, amused by my realization.
"Smart girl," he said, shrugging. "I only married you because my father demanded it. But now that he's retired?" His smile turned vicious. "I'm free to follow my heart."
Heart. The word almost made me laugh.
"James," I said, voice dripping with mock sympathy. "You do know this is called adultery, right?"
Before he could reply, stepped forward with an exaggerated eye roll.
"Adultery? Oh, please." She crossed her arms, smirking. "We all know this is about money. Just name your price—I'll pay whatever you want."
I studied her like she was the most delusional creature I'd ever encountered.
"Miss King," I said slowly, amusement lacing every syllable. "You may be from Los Angeles, but don't mistake that for power. You couldn't begin to afford the consequences of crossing me."
James' face darkened.
"Enough, Eleanor," he snapped. "Stop trying to intimidate people. You're nothing but a glorified pet in this family. Years of marriage, and what have you done? Sat around playing chess. Useless."
I exhaled, a slow, dangerous smile curling my lips.
Oh, James.
You have no idea what you've just started.
