I ripped the Riverdale University acceptance letter to shreds with my own hands—then turned down the desperate confessions from the two so-called "male gods" of our school.
Been there, done that. In my past life, I chose Jeremy. And what did I get? Him ditching me at the altar for Lindsay, leaving me humiliated and my grandmother—the woman who raised me—dead from the shock.
Then came Shawn, my childhood friend, who whispered, "You still have me. I'll never let you down." He helped me pick up the pieces… only to freeze me out after we married. I thought it was because we couldn't have kids.
Turns out, it was worse. During an accident, he walked right past me—bleeding out—to save Lindsay from a scratch. My last sight was his back as I died.
And then I learned the truth: my whole life had been their twisted game. They'd rewritten their wills to leave everything to Lindsay. And the reason I couldn't conceive? They'd paid off a doctor to remove my uterus—proof of loyalty to her.
Not this time.
My homeroom teacher gasped when she saw the torn letter. "Sarah, what are you doing?!"
This year, only four students from No. 1 High got into Riverdale. I was the city's top scorer—the teachers' golden girl.
"I'm not going," I said flatly. "I've joined a research program at National University. They're providing specialized care for my grandmother."
She softened. "We know your situation is… difficult. Study hard, build a future, repay your grandmother's love."
I nodded. No time for self-pity.
Jeremy and Shawn bombarded me with calls, demanding I meet them. On the way, whispers followed me. Someone even stuck out a foot—tripping me on the stairs.
"Bitch," I spat, rubbing my knee.
Then I heard Lindsay's sugar-coated voice around the corner:
"I did see Sarah getting out of the Riverdale directors' car late at night… but maybe she really got in on merit!"
Jeremy scoffed. "Lindsay, stop defending her. If her grades were real, why hide them?"
Shawn chimed in: "You're too kind. A schemer like her would do anything."
The research team's confidentiality agreement had backfired—giving Lindsay ammo to smear me. And these two? They knew how hard I'd worked for my grandmother. Yet here they were, lapping up her lies.
I swallowed the bitterness. Soon, my records would be sealed. No more rumors. No more knives in the back. Just freedom.
Stepping forward, I feigned ignorance. "What did you want to talk about?"
Jeremy's disdain melted into a grin. "Sarah! We'll all be at Riverdale together! All your hard work paid off!"
Shawn beamed like a proud puppy.
Fools. They had no idea—this time, the game was mine to quit.
