I had no choice but to lead all three of them into the living room.
The moment they stepped inside, Jeremy and Shawn dropped to their knees. Their faces were twisted in anguish, their entire bodies trembling with guilt.
Jeremy spoke first, his voice breaking. "Sarah, the night after you left, we both had the same dream. In it... we hurt you. Over and over."
Shawn choked out the next words. "It felt so real—like it actually happened. That's when we finally understood why you left... why you couldn't stand the sight of us."
I stayed silent. The two of them were already sobbing uncontrollably. Then, out of nowhere, Lindsay lunged at me, tears streaming down her face.
"Sarah, please, you have to believe me! I never meant to come between you. I just—I admired them, and I wanted to repay you for everything you've done for me—"
"Shut your mouth!" Shawn yanked her back and slapped her so hard she stumbled. His entire body shook with fury.
Jeremy snarled from behind him, "You lying witch! We found your diary—the one you hid under the table. You never cared about us. You targeted us because you were jealous of Sarah! You wanted to ruin her life through us!"
Piece by piece, their confessions unraveled the truth that had haunted me across two lifetimes.
Lindsay had used me. She'd studied Jeremy and Shawn through me, molding herself into their perfect fantasy—playing coy, acting sweet, manipulating them like puppets.
Realizing she couldn't talk her way out of this, Lindsay finally dropped the act. Her eyes burned with hatred as she screamed, "So what if I did it on purpose? Why does she get everything while I have to beg for scraps? I'm just as beautiful, just as talented—why does everyone adore her? I couldn't stand it! I wanted to ruin her, to prove that everything she had was worthless!"
Shawn lost it. He kicked her so hard she crumpled to the floor. He'd always been reckless in a fight, and right now, he looked ready to kill her.
I had to step in before things got worse. "Enough! If you want to brawl, take it outside. Don't put on this pathetic show in front of me."
Their anger dissolved into despair.
"I'm sorry, Sarah," Jeremy whispered, his voice raw. "I was an idiot. I let her trick me... I forgot everything we had, forgot how incredible you are..."
Shawn just kept repeating, "I never stopped loving you. I was just... scared I'd never be enough for you. So I lied to myself."
They thought dragging me down would keep me with them forever.
But the universe had other plans. I fought. I grew wings in the mud they tried to trap me in—and I flew far beyond their reach.
Lindsay ended up in the hospital, her face permanently scarred before she dropped out of school.
Jeremy and Shawn faced consequences too. Through my mentor's influence, I made sure the Waltz and Mondale families kept them away from me.
They could push around the orphaned little Sarah. But the woman I'd become? She didn't break. She rose.
The day I returned to the research center, the sun blazed golden in the sky.
I didn't know what fate had in store for those three. But my future?
It was dazzling.
