A group of giggling schoolgirls passed by, shooting me envious glances. But my heart remained cold, untouched.
In my past life, all four of us had attended the same university. Determined to build a bright future, I poured myself into my studies and threw myself into campus activities. Yet in the end, Lindsay had stolen everything—my scholarships, my postgraduate spot—all through underhanded schemes.
And the rumors… Oh, the rumors. Whispers that I'd slept with faculty members to get ahead. The isolation, the bullying—four long years of torment.
Back then, Jeremy and Shawn had promised to stand by me, to protect me. Only in death did I learn the truth—they were the ones orchestrating it all. Night after night, I'd cried myself to sleep, my pain nothing more than fuel for Lindsay's happiness.
Noticing my silence, Lindsay sighed dramatically, her voice dripping with fake sweetness.
"Sarah's so lucky. Born into wealth, blessed with beauty, and adored by her childhood friends. Me? I'd be nothing without her charity—probably wouldn't even be in school."
The words hit their mark. Jeremy and Shawn immediately jumped to comfort her.
"Lindsay, don't say that!" Jeremy protested. "You're incredible—smart, beautiful, destined for greatness. After graduation, I'll have my father make you a general manager!"
Shawn cut in, competitive as ever. "No, come to my company. I'll give you a higher position, better pay—anything you want!"
They bickered over her like dogs fighting for a bone. The ache in my chest was unbearable.
After all these years, they'd never once offered me such devotion. Fake affection could never compare to real love.
As I turned to leave, Jeremy caught my wrist, guilt flashing in his eyes. "Sarah, don't overthink it. We're just being nice to Lindsay because she's your friend."
Shawn ruffled my hair like I was a child. "Relax. Exams are over—let's go for a drive. We've got a surprise for you."
I nodded, not refusing. One last look at this city, the place where we'd grown up together—maybe that's what I needed.
At the garage, they rushed to open their car doors—for Lindsay.
She hesitated, playing innocent. "But… isn't Sarah the only one allowed in your passenger seats? Won't she be upset?"
Jeremy practically shoved her in. "She doesn't deserve—I mean, she won't mind. Sarah's always been easygoing."
Shawn shot him a glare before slamming his own car door shut, irritation written all over his face.
It wasn't until the engines roared to life that they realized—I wasn't in either car.
They rolled down their windows, stammering for an excuse.
I spared them the trouble. "It's fine. I'll drive myself."
Relief washed over them—but so did confusion. This wasn't the Sarah they knew.
"Sarah—" Jeremy started.
I rolled up my window before he could finish, cutting off whatever hollow words were coming next. But as the city blurred past, memories flooded in—unwanted, unstoppable.
The three of us had been inseparable since childhood. Jeremy and Shawn had chased after me for years, swearing their love. But after my parents died, leaving only Grandma and me to hold the Jenner family together, everything changed.
And now, here we were.
