An old woman and a young girl—barely holding together a crumbling family, surrounded by circling jackals. So I buried myself in my studies, desperate to shoulder the family's burdens before it was too late.
Lindsay came from nothing, just like me. An outcast at school, an orphan with no one to rely on. When I found out, my heart ached for her. I reached out, paid her tuition, pulled her into my circle. We'll get through this together, I told her.
But she twisted my kindness into pity. Resentment festered. She coveted everything I had—my friends, my life. And bit by bit, she turned my childhood companions against me. By the time I realized it, the three of them had already torn my world apart.
A sigh escaped me as we arrived at our destination.
The confrontation from earlier had left Jeremy and Shawn uneasy. They scrambled out of the car, rushing to open my door, grabbing my bag like overeager attendants.
Jeremy's voice was bright with forced cheer. "Sarah, look! Remember this place? Shawn and I bought it—just like we promised when we were kids. Our own secret hideout."
Shawn nodded, eager to please. "I had them plant tulips—your favorite. Next spring, the whole field will bloom. Imagine it."
"Then the four of us can ride through the flowers," Jeremy added, grinning.
Their faces glowed with manufactured nostalgia.
I stared at the empty plot, silent. This was our childhood sanctuary, where we'd made a thousand memories. But tulips? I hated tulips. I was allergic.
Funny. I only learned that on the day I died.
Some affections, it turns out, are just performances.
Just as I opened my mouth to refuse, Lindsay's voice cut in—soft, wounded. "Sarah… why did you tell everyone I spread those awful rumors about you? Now the whole school is calling me a liar."
She shoved her phone at me. The screen glared with the school's forum—hundreds of comments branding me a gold-digging slut. The handful defending me? Proof, Lindsay claimed, that I was orchestrating a smear campaign against her.
Shawn snatched the phone, his face darkening. "Sarah, how could you? If you want to ruin your own reputation, fine—but dragging Lindsay into it?"
Jeremy, ever the cooler head, didn't shout. But his eyes—full of doubt—cut deeper than any accusation.
I swallowed the rage rising in my throat. "I didn't do this. Check the IPs yourself if you don't believe me."
Neither bothered. They were too busy fussing over Lindsay.
"Don't worry, Lindsay, I'll call PR—we'll fix this."
"Let's get cake. Chocolate always helps."
Arm in arm, they led her away. Not a single glance back.
I exhaled slowly, watching the last embers of the fireworks fade into ash.
After facing death, some betrayals just… don't burn anymore.
