At least I was still breathing—with a whole new life and future ahead of me.
I wanted to drive home, but then it hit me—Shawn had taken my bag. My only option was to trail behind the trio walking ahead.
As we passed a thicket of bushes, Shawn's grating voice cut through the air.
"Lindsay, babe, how much longer are we gonna keep up this act? I can't take it anymore. Sarah's out here acting like some kind of wildcard—who knows what diseases she's carrying?"
"She's so clueless she can't even tell real antiques from fakes. No wonder some sleazy old man sweet-talked her into bed. Someone like that has no business being the Waltz Family's heiress. That heirloom ring? It belongs on you, Lindsay."
Lindsay blinked up at them with those pitiful doe eyes.
"Sarah's done terrible things, sure… but she's always been good to me. How can I just abandon her? If you don't listen to me, I swear I'll never speak to either of you again!"
The moment those words left her lips, the two spoiled heirs of the town's wealthiest family fell over themselves apologizing, tripping over their own tongues to praise her while throwing me under the bus.
So much for over a decade of friendship—shattered in an instant by Lindsay's theatrics. I swallowed the lump in my throat, turned on my heel, and walked away before the tears could spill.
The night stretched endlessly before me as I dragged my exhausted body home.
By the time I got there, my sprained ankle had swollen to twice its size—ugly and throbbing. Grandma's face crumpled with worry as she rushed to rub medicinal wine on it. Not wanting to upset her further, I told her about my academic success instead.
Her eyes lit up. "My Sarah, making us proud! I'm not getting any younger, and you're the only hope left for the Jenner Family."
I nodded, blinking back tears.
"After all these years, the Jenners finally have something to celebrate! I'm throwing you the grandest banquet!" Her beaming smile mirrored the one she'd worn when sending me off to marry in my past life—back when she thought I'd found happiness. But the shock of Jeremy's betrayal had killed her right there at the altar.
Not this time. I wouldn't let history repeat itself. Since Grandma was getting on in years, I took charge of the banquet preparations myself.
When news spread, my so-called childhood friends showed up uninvited, bearing my favorite chocolate cake from when we were kids—their half-baked peace offering.
"Sarah, you've been ghosting us for days. Still mad about what happened?"
"We weren't trying to gang up on you. We just didn't want you ruining your reputation. People like us—status matters."
I didn't forgive them. But I let them stay, if only because they owed me far more than they could ever repay. In this life, I just wanted them out of it for good.
After my parents died, the Jenner name had faded into obscurity—until now. This banquet wasn't just a celebration; it was a statement. The Jenners weren't pushovers anymore.
Grandma treated it like a matter of life and death, leaving no detail overlooked.
The night of the event, the place was packed with the city's elite.
And of course, there was Lindsay—sashaying in behind my ex-friends in some overpriced designer dress, her eyes burning with envy as she took in the lavish hall.
"Sarah's always been lucky."
Then, under her breath: "But what good is pedigree and perfect grades? I'll still ruin you."
The second those words left her lips, the screens around the hall flickered to life—flashing one explicit photo after another of me, naked, tangled with faceless men.
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
"That's the Jenner girl? Disgusting. No wonder they say kids without parents turn out wild."
"Guess the rumors about her sleeping her way into university were true after all."
