After their trip, summer was winding down and school would start soon. Jeremy and Shawn had enjoyed themselves, but something nagged at them - a lingering dissatisfaction they couldn't shake.
What Lindsay had done last time was seriously messed up.
I'd already been through enough - losing both parents so young, left with just my frail grandmother. Sure, I'd made some bad choices, but was it really all my fault? We'd grown up together, been childhood sweethearts. What exactly had I done wrong? As my brothers, they should've had my back more.
Thinking this, Jeremy and Shawn loaded up on gifts for me during the drive home.
They went straight to the hospital to visit Grandma Jenner, arms full of supplements. But they got shut down hard.
"Mrs. Jenner requires special care. Please do not disturb her rest."
Those four words - "do not disturb her" - cut deep. These guys had practically grown up in my house. We weren't just friends - we were family. And now they were being dismissed like strangers? Shawn rolled up his sleeves ready to throw hands, but Jeremy stopped him with a sharp look.
As the Waltz family heir, Jeremy clocked something off about the staff's demeanor.
"Where's Sarah? Get her out here - she'll tell you who we are!" Jeremy demanded.
The response was ice cold: "Unnecessary."
They got escorted out, humiliated.
Shawn exploded once they were outside. "Sarah's attitude is getting out of control! Who does she think she is? We've been too damn nice - spoiled her rotten!"
"Let it go," Jeremy said, though something felt wrong in his gut - like part of him had gone missing. "We'll check her house."
When they pulled up to my place, every light was off. Not a soul home.
Now even hotheaded Shawn got worried. They scaled the fence like old times, creeping through the dark to my room.
But the space that had always been so warm and lived-in stood empty - just dust and echoes.
"No way..." Jeremy whispered, running his hand over barren shelves. "Where are all the things I gave her? She treasured these!"
"My gifts are gone too," Shawn realized. "Our photos, the trip journals... everything."
They locked eyes, that hollow feeling swallowing them whole.
"Where would she even go?" Shawn asked. "The Jenners have been down and out for years - nobody would risk taking her in!"
"She's probably just sulking somewhere," Shawn tried to convince himself. "When we find her, she's getting an earful. Like the Jenners have any right to give us attitude now?"
Frantically, they started calling everyone who might know where I'd disappeared to.
