They sent every bodyguard they had to search for me, turning the city upside down until dawn. Nothing. My ID, bank cards—all useless. The one person who knew where I was? Untouchable.
Me—the girl who'd always stayed by their side, no matter what—was gone. Like mist dissolving into air, leaving no trace behind.
Jeremy and Shawn were wrecked. Fear, grief—they couldn't even bring themselves to entertain Lindsay's invitations.
"Where's Sarah?"
"Is she mad at us? Will she ever forgive us?"
Silence. No answer came. That brilliant, beautiful girl they'd once known? She wasn't coming back.
After a long flight and an even longer car ride, I finally arrived.
The professor greeted me with open arms. "Sarah! We've been waiting for you. When we heard you'd applied to Riverdale, our hearts nearly broke. A mind like yours? We couldn't let you slip away."
"Thank you," I said, bowing slightly. "I won't let you down."
He scanned my file. "Your research interest goes way back. So why Riverdale at first?"
I hesitated. Riverdale had been Jeremy and Shawn's dream. We'd grown up together—from babbling toddlers to adults, inseparable. We'd promised: same university, same future. No parting, ever.
Then Lindsay showed up. Took my place. Jeremy and Shawn used their family's influence to secure spots through the back door. And for Lindsay? They spent fortunes.
And then—they had the nerve to spread rumors that I was the one who'd slept my way to the top.
A bitter smile tugged at my lips. "I was young. Trusted the wrong people. Took the wrong path. But now?" I met his gaze. "I won't make that mistake again."
This was my second chance. I wouldn't waste it.
The professor clapped my shoulder, satisfied. "Good. That's what I like to hear." He chuckled. "I'll admit, I worried a delicate girl like you might not handle the grind. But seeing you now? The future's in good hands."
Hard work? Please. Nothing could compare to my past life. At least now, my grandmother was alive. At least now, I wasn't throwing my life away for two worthless men.
From then on, I buried myself in my studies, shutting out the world.
Until one day, leaving the lab, I nearly collided with—
Jeremy and Shawn.
I blinked, sure my sleep-deprived eyes were playing tricks. But then they called my name.
The senior beside me muttered, "Sarah, steer clear. Rumor is they dropped 20 million just to get access to the lab."
Shawn's expression darkened as he yanked me away.
"Couldn't stand being alone, huh? Always flirting. If you're that desperate, just come to me."
