"Jeremy, Shawn, I'm not that helpless orphan you used to push around anymore. No one gets to hurt me or my grandmother ever again."
I had bigger things ahead of me—no time to waste on people who weren't worth it.
They opened their mouths to argue, but the research center's security stepped in.
"Gentlemen, the interview is over. Please leave and refrain from disrupting our operations."
Reluctantly, they backed off.
But after a few steps, Jeremy suddenly turned, his gaze locking onto mine.
"Sarah, we grew up together. I refuse to believe you've become this heartless—that our past means nothing to you now."
Shawn nodded frantically. "We messed up, but we'll prove how much we still care. One day, you'll forgive us!"
I almost laughed. Their lines hadn't changed—not in this life, not in the last. Back then, they'd used the same sentimental act to trick me into marrying them, only to abandon me for Lindsay.
What I couldn't wrap my head around was—why me? If they were so obsessed with Lindsay, why come crawling back now, pretending their love for me ran deep? Were they even sincere? Or was this just another scheme for her sake?
Either way, my future had no room for them. Or so I thought.
Turns out, I underestimated their persistence.
For weeks, the research center was flooded with gifts—double the usual meals, my favorite dishes, and chocolate cake delivered like clockwork every noon. Even the janitors got treats.
My senior brother raised an eyebrow. "Someone's courting you hard. Must be nice."
"Jealous?"
"Of what? None of us chose this path for cake and empty flattery."
Exactly. I wasn't that naive girl anymore, swayed by sweets and sweet talk. My future was bright, my life my own. Jeremy and Shawn? Just a blip in my long journey.
But the more I ignored them, the harder they pushed. The gifts kept coming until my mentor finally stepped in, putting an end to the absurd spectacle.
Peace returned—until the holidays.
Back home, there was no avoiding them.
This time, they looked rough—like life had chewed them up and spat them out. The polished heir and the rebellious rich boy, now shadows of their former selves.
I was helping Grandma stroll through the yard when they showed up—with Lindsay in tow, tears streaming down her face.
"Sarah, we need to talk."
"I know you hate this, but it's the last time. If we don't say this now… we'll regret it forever."
I was ready to walk away, but Grandma squeezed my hand.
"Go. Some things can't be outrun. Whatever happens, it's time to face it."
