Panic finally flickered across my mother-in-law's face.
"Find a way out already! What are you doing just lying there?"
Without any tools, I had no choice but to claw through the hard gravel with my bare hands, wincing as my fingers split and bled.
Behind me, my mother-in-law stood frozen, her stillness making me glance back instinctively. What I saw in her cold, indifferent stare sent a chill down my spine.
There was something darker there—a flicker of intent that made my stomach drop. The realization hit me like a punch to the gut: She doesn't want me to make it out alive.
In my past life, I'd called Owen, begging him to come help us, but he'd hesitated.
"I'm on leave," he'd said, his voice tight. "I promised Bianca Morgan—my first love—the whole day. Just call 911."
But 911 was swamped, and with my phone battery dying, Owen had reluctantly agreed to come.
When he finally arrived with the rescue team, he dug my mother-in-law out first. I'd reached for her, expecting her to pull me up—but instead, she'd gripped my hand, locked eyes with me, and let go with an icy glare.
I barely caught myself on a steel bar, saving my own life.
Later, when I confronted her, she denied everything.
But the damage was done. Because Owen had been forced to rescue us, he'd missed his time with Bianca—and in her despair, she'd turned on the gas, dying in a tragic fire.
At Bianca's funeral, Owen was eerily calm as he buried her himself. But just as her ashes were lowered into the grave, he suddenly pulled out a gasoline canister, his face twisting into something unrecognizable.
I stumbled back, my heart pounding. "What are you doing?"
"What do you think?" His voice was a low, dangerous growl. "I want you to feel the fire for yourself."
Before I could react, he drenched me in gasoline, his movements frantic, unhinged.
"No! Stop! Someone help!"
"Scream all you want," he sneered. "I chose dawn for a reason—no one's around to hear you."
I tried to run, but my mother-in-law stuck out her leg, tripping me. Her glare was venomous.
"You bitch," she spat. "You killed my real daughter-in-law. You deserve this."
That's when it hit me—she'd always wanted Bianca, not me.
But it was too late. Owen flicked the lighter, the flame catching with a sharp snap, and hurled it at me.
The fire erupted instantly, swallowing me whole.
The agony was unbearable—my skin blistered, my hair burned away, the heat searing down to my bones. I collapsed in front of Bianca's tombstone, my screams raw with pain.
Owen watched from a distance, his smile twisted.
"Now you know how Bianca suffered."
"Please, Owen! I didn't know she'd—"
"Shut up!" he roared. "You killed her. Now burn."
The flames ate deeper, and as my vision blurred, I realized—this was the end.
