Thank God my tumbling descent down the hillside outpaced Owen and Bianca's pursuit. Ahead, I spotted the gate - and salvation - with several security guards stationed nearby. Gasping for air, my lungs on fire, I pushed my battered body harder and screamed with everything I had left.
"Help! They're trying to kill me! Please, somebody help!"
The guards sprang into action at my desperate cries. Two of them hauled me up from where I'd collapsed, my body aching from the brutal fall.
"Easy ma'am, you're safe now," one guard assured me, his voice steady. "Nobody's going to hurt you here."
They formed a human shield around me, their broad shoulders blocking Owen and Bianca from view.
Safety. Finally. But the adrenaline crash hit me like a truck - the pain, the terror, everything overwhelmed me at once. My vision tunneled, and then... darkness.
I came to tied to a chair, arms wrenched painfully behind me. The guards I'd trusted now glared at me with open contempt. And there stood Owen and Bianca, smirking like they'd won the lottery.
I thrashed against the ropes. "What the hell? Untie me! They're the murderers!" My voice cracked with panic.
One guard sneered, his voice dripping with disgust. "Shut your mouth. This man says you watched his mother die in the earthquake - didn't lift a finger to help. A monster like you belongs on her knees at that gravesite."
The others joined in like a pack of hyenas:
"Disgusting! Who abandons family like that?"
"Tie her up good - let her apologize properly!"
Owen stepped forward with that fake-concern act he'd perfected. "Lily, you were violent back there. I'll untie you... after Mom's properly buried." His tone oozed false sympathy.
Bianca dabbed at dry eyes. "The earthquake was an act of God, but Owen's mother... that was your doing. How can you be so heartless?"
"Lies! All of it!" I screamed. "She framed me!"
CRACK! Owen's palm connected with my cheek before I could finish. The slap echoed like a gunshot.
"Enough!" he roared. "My dying mother's last words accused you! How dare you call her a liar now that she's gone?"
The head guard waved his hand like a judge passing sentence. "Let's get this over with. Help Mr. Miller take her to the grave."
Like obedient sheep, the clueless guards hauled me toward the cemetery. The midday sun beat down as visitors began leaving. Their whispers followed me like a trail of poison:
"That's the lunatic from the hillside!"
"Thank God they caught her!"
"Poor Miller family - can't even bury their matriarch in peace with that demon around."
Every judgmental stare, every hissed comment drove home the terrifying truth - I was completely alone.
