I clenched my hands behind my back and squeezed my eyes shut, playing dead. Owen spat in disgust, jabbing my side with his boot.
"Tch. She passed out already? Pathetic."
"My mother must be thrilled—now she's got two daughters-in-law to keep her company in the grave."
My heart hammered against my ribs. Before I could process his words, a heavy thud sounded beside me—Bianca's body, dumped like trash.
I couldn't believe it. Owen wasn't just burying me alive—he'd murdered Bianca without hesitation.
Noon sunlight baked the cemetery. The mourners and priests had left, even the staff gone for lunch. The place was eerily silent, just us and Owen's ragged breathing as he furiously shoveled dirt onto us.
Through slitted eyes, I spotted a second shovel leaning against the tomb. Biding my time, I waited until Owen bent to scoop more soil—then lunged. Grabbing the shovel, I swung for his head.
He barely blocked it, snarling, "Damn bitch! Still fighting? Doesn't matter—you're dying today!" He raised his shovel, face twisted with hate—
"FREEZE! POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON!"
Officers surged forward, guns trained on Owen. For a split second, he hesitated—then swung harder.
"If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me!"
BANG! A gunshot tore through the air. Owen's arm jerked back, blood blooming through his sleeve. His scream pierced the silence as he collapsed into the grave.
As cops swarmed to cuff him, their faces paled at the sight of Bianca's body. I staggered upright, trembling. Her once-beautiful face was mottled with bruises, eyes frozen wide—strangled.
So that's why I'd been tied up earlier. They must've fought before it went quiet.
My husband—Owen Miller—was a monster.
Dragged away, he laughed like a madman. "Anyone who betrays me dies!"
Before giving my statement, I asked the officers for one thing: to bury my mother-in-law myself. Kneeling in the dirt, I finally laid her to rest.
Months later, Owen got the death penalty. At the detention center, he'd withered to a shadow of himself. The moment he saw me, tears spilled over.
"I'm sorry, Lily… I failed you. Failed Bianca. Failed Mom. I deserve this."
I didn't blink. "I'm not here for apologies. Tell me everything about you and Bianca—now."
He swallowed hard.
Turns out, they weren't just lovers.
They were childhood sweethearts.
