Max's fury erupted as he violently pushed Violet aside, his voice shaking with barely contained rage. "Who the hell do you think you are, talking to my wife that way?"
"Your wife? She's gone, Max," Violet countered, confusion twisting her features. She'd expected him to be relieved now that Cassie was out of their lives.
"Gone?" Max's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "If I don't find her because of you, I swear to God you'll pay for this."
Violet's face paled as desperation crept into her voice. "Max, be reasonable! This is what we wanted. Now we can be together - especially with our baby on the way."
"Baby?" Max's eyes burned with disgust.
Violet's confidence faltered but she pressed on. "She left you, Max! Why chase after someone who walked away? We can build a real family!" She cradled her stomach, her pleading expression at odds with her manipulative words.
A harsh, humorless laugh burst from Max's lips. "Family? Don't delude yourself, Violet. You're nothing to me."
Her face crumpled. "What did you say?"
"Nothing. You were just a convenient fuck when I needed one. This was never love - just a transaction. That's all you've ever been."
Tears spilled down Violet's cheeks. "But we've known each other our whole lives! We were supposed to-"
Max cut her off with a derisive snort. "That's your problem. You've been living in some pathetic fantasy while I was destroying the only thing that ever mattered to me."
Violet staggered back as if physically struck. "Tell me this is some sick joke..."
When she reached for him, Max recoiled violently. "Don't touch me!" he roared. "The only person I belong with is my wife. And now, thanks to you, she's gone."
"Max, please," Violet begged, her voice breaking.
"Stay the hell away from me," he growled, stepping back with icy finality. "This ends now." Leaning in, his whisper carried deadly promise: "If I don't find Cassie, Violet? Pray we never cross paths again. Because I'll make sure you regret this for the rest of your miserable life."
As Max turned to leave, Violet's tear-streaked face twisted with sudden defiance. "You won't hurt me, Max," she spat venomously. "Not when I'm carrying your child! Or has that little detail slipped your mind?"
The words detonated in Max's mind like dynamite. His vision went red. Spotting the golf club leaning against the wall, he moved without thinking.
"You ruined everything!" he howled, primal rage consuming him.
Violet's bravado evaporated as she backpedaled. "Max, calm down-"
But reason had left him. All that remained was white-hot fury at her manipulations, at his shattered marriage, at everything she'd stolen from him.
The first swing connected with a sickening crack. Violet's scream pierced the air as she crumpled to the floor. Bystanders gasped in horror, shouting for him to stop, but their voices barely registered.
Gripping the club with bone-white knuckles, Max raised it again.
"MAX, STOP!" Violet shrieked, scrambling backward in terror. "You're not thinking straight!"
