"Who the hell are you? You can't just waltz in here and take a patient!" The nurse's protests were useless against Jasper Ford. The towering man's eyes turned to ice.
"Move. Now. You've got bigger problems than me - like the cops about to bust down that door."
Right on cue, officers swarmed in, pinning the nurse against the wall.
"We have evidence of malpractice. You're coming with us."
Only when I was safe in Jasper's car, trembling in his arms, did the reality hit me.
"Jasper...is this real? Am I dead?"
He shoved two fingers between my teeth. I bit down hard until copper flooded my tongue. The pain confirmed it - I was alive.
"Doctor, take my blood instead. Type B, same as hers. I'm fine."
Fading in and out, I burrowed into Jasper's chest like I used to as a child.
When consciousness returned, I found myself in a sterile hospital bed. Jasper sat slumped beside me, our fingers intertwined so tightly his knuckles were white. The dark circles under his eyes told me he hadn't slept.
The moment I stirred, he snapped awake.
"Where does it hurt?" His voice was rough with exhaustion.
"They worked on you for three hours last night." His thumb brushed my wrist. "You nearly stopped my heart."
The dam broke. Sobs wracked my body.
"You saved me. Again."
After the Bellamy family's nanny switched me at birth, I wound up in an orphanage. That's where I met Jasper - already fierce, already protective at eight years old. When I got adopted at ten, we lost each other...
Until last month's Ford family gala. There he stood in dress uniform, chest gleaming with medals. The prodigal grandson returned a war hero. His first words to me after fifteen years?
"Divorce him."
I'd been livid. "Save your invitation - you'll be eating crow at our golden anniversary."
How tragically wrong I'd been.
Jasper cradled me closer now, his promise vibrating through my bones: "Every single person who hurt you will pay."
Across the hospital, Mira's gurney rolled back into her room. Theo finally exhaled.
"Hey, where's the blood donor?"
Only now remembering my existence. The nurse blinked. "She was just..."
Theo waved it off. "Probably ran home to lick her wounds. Drama queen." His jaw tightened. "Like she'd actually die from giving blood."
Mira's tear-stained face turned toward him. "Theo...I couldn't protect our baby." A delicate sniffle. "But please don't blame my sister. She just...loves you too much."
Theo's heart shattered anew. "You always defend her! Where was she when you were hemorrhaging for days?"
Mira's lips curved sadly. "Love makes fools of us all."
