"Didn't I tell you to get rid of those records? How the hell did Fiona find out?" Matt demanded, running a hand through his hair. "She won't answer my calls. Three days—three damn days—and nothing. This isn't like her. Help me fix this!"
Henry exhaled, frustration and guilt weighing on him. "Let's be real, Matt. Do you honestly think she wants to see you right now?"
He leaned forward, voice low. "We've been friends since we were kids. As your best friend, I warned you. Fiona isn't Taylor. She's sharper, stronger. When we set up that surgery, I knew she wasn't someone to mess with. But you didn't listen."
His jaw tightened. "She knew Fiona's mother was fighting for her life, and suddenly her mom needed a transplant? That wasn't a coincidence—it was a calculated move. She was practically waving a sign in your face, and you fell for it."
Henry rubbed his temples. "I feel like crap because I betrayed Fiona too. I operated on her mother behind her back. But this? This is karma, Matt. She found out, and now you're on your own."
He locked eyes with him. "Whether she forgives you or not, one thing's clear—things will never go back to the way they were. You know that, right?"
Matt collapsed onto the couch, defeat etched into every line of his face.
Before he could speak, Henry added, "There's something else."
A heavy pause.
"These past few years, watching you and Fiona together? It's obvious. Maybe you were too blind to see it, but you love her, Matt. Haven't you figured that out yet?"
Henry's voice turned sharp. "When she ignores your texts, you panic. When she vanishes, you lose it. If Taylor was really the one, why aren't you running to her now that nothing's stopping you?"
He leaned in. "Tell me—since Fiona walked out, have you even thought about Taylor?" A bitter laugh. "Wake up, man. Taylor's your past. Fiona's your life."
With that, Henry stood and left, the door clicking shut behind him.
Alone, Matt stared at the cold coffee on his desk, Henry's words echoing in his head.
For the first time in five years, doubt crept in.
Had he been lying to himself? Everything he'd done was supposed to be for Taylor's happiness. So why, now that she had everything, did he feel so hollow?
The only thing that brought him peace was the memory of Fiona's smile when he surprised her with gifts.
Had he changed?
Or had he just been blind?
