Matt closed his eyes, trying to summon memories of Taylor—from their first meeting until now. But every time, only Fiona's face appeared behind his eyelids—her radiant smile, those joyful eyes sparkling with life.
When exactly had Fiona replaced Taylor in his heart? The realization crept up on him—this love had taken root long ago, so deep he couldn't pinpoint its beginning.
They'd been childhood sweethearts, neighbors growing up together. Protecting Fiona had always come as naturally as breathing. He'd even vowed she'd be the only woman he'd ever marry.
Then Taylor walked into his life.
She was different—shy, always lowering her gaze when he spoke. For the first time, he questioned everything. Maybe being with Taylor wouldn't be so bad?
That thought became obsession. He convinced himself his care for Fiona was merely familial. Four years he pursued Taylor—his entire college existence revolving around her. Yet every confession met rejection, until the day he watched helplessly as she fell into Gregg's arms.
From then on, he became Taylor's silent guardian, sacrificing everything for her happiness—even encouraging Gregg to propose to her, despite his engagement to Fiona. When Fiona's mother lay dying, he betrayed Fiona to save Taylor's mother.
Now, the truth hit him like a gut punch: his devotion to Taylor was just habit. Fiona had always owned his heart.
The realization burned like poison in his veins. When Taylor's call interrupted his torment, his finger hovered over "decline"—a reflex that shocked him.
Tears fell as his hand froze mid-air. He'd lost, and there was no going back.
After rejecting the call, Taylor's messages popped up—playful, sweet:
"Matt, why haven't you signed the shareholder contract yet?"
"Matt, why are you ignoring me?"
Each word grated on his nerves. Now, any contact with Taylor felt like betrayal to his missing wife.
His chest constricted thinking of Fiona. He stormed out, heading to file an official missing person report.
The officer's words made his blood boil: "No traffic records show her leaving the city."
"What the hell do you mean?" Matt slammed his fist on the counter. "My wife vanishes into thin air and you can't find a single lead? Check the damn surveillance cameras! What am I paying taxes for if you can't do your jobs?"
