The bathroom door clicked open. Matt emerged with damp hair clinging to his forehead, his robe loosely tied around his waist. "Lily, I'm starving," he murmured, running a hand through his wet locks. Then he saw his phone in my grasp and went completely still.
Our eyes met in heavy silence before I slowly turned the screen toward him. For just a heartbeat, his perfect facade shattered—I saw panic flash across his face before he schooled his features back into that familiar, infuriating calm.
"Lily, let me explain—" he began, then stopped abruptly. His jaw worked for a moment before he waved a dismissive hand. "It's nothing. Just some misunderstanding from the past." His voice dropped to that low, reasonable tone he used when explaining why my feelings were unreasonable. "We're getting married. Isn't that enough for you?"
A hysterical laugh bubbled up from my chest before I could stop it. The tears came then, streaming down my face as laughter shook my whole body. Typical Matt—he actually thought my breakdown meant forgiveness. His posture relaxed as he reached for me. "See? It's all behind us now. Just you and me," he soothed, that smooth politician's voice wrapping around the words.
I wiped my cheeks with the back of my hand, still giggling through the tears, and shoved him away with more force than I knew I had. Looking up at the man who'd been my whole world for four years, I finally found my voice—steady and final. "We're through, Matt."
