The silence between us stretched painfully long. Finally, he broke it with a weary sigh. "Lily..." His face looked drained, the lines of exhaustion cutting deep. "Don't do this."
Do this? As if my shattered heart was just some childish tantrum. My fingers twisted into my shirt, the fabric the only thing keeping me from falling apart as another stabbing pain shot through my chest. Then his phone buzzed—again.
Nina: "Matt, just landed. Can you come get me?"
The words blurred as a slow, sickening ache pulsed through my body. "Please don't go," I begged, my fingers curling into his sleeve. But his face had already brightened at the message. He shot me an impatient look. "Lily, she's alone at the airport." His dark eyes held no warmth as he pried my hand away, snatched his jacket, and walked out.
The door clicked shut behind him, tearing something open inside me. I sat frozen, hollow—like some broken toy tossed aside. He hesitated at the threshold just long enough to toss over his shoulder, "Get some rest," before disappearing into the night.
By morning, he still wasn't back. Then Mark's post flashed across my screen: "Welcome back, gorgeous!" There they were—Matt with his arm draped around a smiling girl, her curls bouncing, his gaze dripping with devotion.
That's when I knew. It was time to go.
