The condom. It all came rushing back—our first night living together. I'd asked him, voice trembling, if there would ever be anyone else. He'd stroked my hair, his breath warm against my neck, whispering, "Never has been, never will be. Only you, Lily. Always." I wanted to laugh, but the sound died in my throat. How could someone change overnight? Or worse—had he always been this person, and I'd just refused to see it?
I felt Matt step up behind me. He must've realized what I'd found. His fingers closed around my arm. "Lily, let me explain—"
I turned and slapped him. Hard.
"Get out!" I snatched my things and shoved past him, storming toward the front door. Nina stood in the hallway, balancing a dish from the kitchen. "Have some lunch before you go," she offered gently, that infuriatingly serene smile still in place.
I locked eyes with her. "No thanks. I'll wait for the wedding invitation."
Matt stumbled out of the bedroom, clutching his reddened cheek. And just like that, I saw him clearly—not the man I'd loved, but someone painfully ordinary. Handsome, sure, but hollow. The light I'd thought was in him? It had been mine all along.
