The moment I walked into my parents' house, the whole family was gathered in the living room. Dad didn't waste a second—he hurled a slipper at my feet the second he saw me.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" he bellowed, his face turning red. "Dumping Matt over something so stupid? Have you lost your damn mind?!" His chest heaved like he'd just run a marathon.
Gail, my stepmom, rushed to his side, rubbing his back. "Tom, calm down. Lily must have her reasons. Let her talk." She shot me a desperate look, silently begging me to defuse the bomb.
"Reasons? What possible reasons could she have?!" Dad snapped, gripping his chest like he was about to have a heart attack. "Matt's a damn good guy—always helping out, always respectful. You won't find another man like him!"
The room fell into an unbearable silence. I just stood there, staring at him, my throat tight. Finally, Dad sighed, his anger deflating into something sadder.
"Lily, sweetheart… good men don't grow on trees. Someone who'll take care of you when Gail and I are gone. Your brother can't watch over you forever. You need someone." He hesitated, then added, "Matt called me. He explained everything. So what if he texted his ex? So what if he gave her a ride? It's not the end of the world."
"Dad…" I let out a weak, bitter laugh. My voice came out rough, like gravel. "They slept together."
Dead silence.
Then—
"He… what?!" Dad choked, clutching his chest again. "That… that goddamn son of a bitch!"
The next morning, I headed to the vet clinic to pick up Buddy—the fluffy white ball of energy Matt and I had adopted together. His big, black-bean eyes blinked up at me as the vet handed him over. He'd been sick, so he'd stayed a few extra days. Now that Matt was out of the picture, Buddy was officially mine.
Men were replaceable. Dogs were not.
Before leaving, I got a friend request—Nina. I accepted without thinking, then, out of habit, scrolled through her profile. Her settings only showed the last three days of posts.
The most recent one?
Matt, cradling a white cat with an injured leg, smiling like he'd just found treasure. The caption: "Poor kitty. You're family now."
My stomach twisted.
A white Persian cat with emerald eyes had been my first choice. I'd loved them. But Matt? Terrified. A childhood scratch had turned him into a full-blown cat hater. So we'd compromised—got Buddy instead.
I tapped Like on instinct, then slammed the app shut and called a ride.
When I walked into the clinic, a tall, broad-shouldered guy stood at the reception desk, his back to me. Something about his stance felt familiar.
The door chimed. He turned.
"Hi, can I help y—Lily?!" His face lit up like I'd just handed him a winning lottery ticket.
My jaw dropped. "Josh Miller?! You're back?!"
My high school lab partner. Standing right in front of me.
