Three years had passed, and our lives had taken completely different paths. Nina chased her dreams overseas, studying to become a fashion designer. As for Matt—rumor had it the accident left him with permanent damage, forcing him to walk with a limp. His business collapsed under mountains of debt, and eventually, he vanished back to his small hometown, dodging creditors.
Meanwhile, I passed my veterinary exams and settled into life as a full-fledged vet. And… I was getting ready to marry Josh.
While browsing wedding dresses, my fingers brushed against a pale gold gown, and suddenly, a memory flickered to life. Three years ago, I'd picked out a dress just like this one. Matt had frowned, nudged it aside, and handed me a white strapless gown instead. "Trust me," he'd whispered, his breath warm against my ear. "You'll look stunning in this one."
I'd rolled my eyes but humored him. When I stepped out of the dressing room, his reaction was unforgettable—he just stared, speechless, eyes glistening. "Does it look good?" I'd asked.
He smiled, his whole face lighting up, and said something—but right then, a balloon popped, drowning out his words. All I caught was the movement of his lips. When I asked him to repeat it, he just nodded, still smiling.
That unanswered question nagged at me for years.
Now, I finally knew.
What he'd said was, "You look beautiful, Nina."
