Brent's tears splattered against the glass of their wedding photo, each drop distorting their smiling faces beneath.
Shalane stood frozen, blood oozing from her temple in a slow crimson trail as she gaped at him.
The room erupted with chaos as Galvin and Devin came barreling in, their shrill screams cutting through the air as they launched themselves at their mother.
Galvin planted himself in front of Shalane like a tiny bodyguard, snarling at Brent with bared teeth. "You're not my father! You're just some monster! When I run the company, I'll throw you out to starve in the gutter!"
Brent's blood ran cold. These venomous words were coming from the same child he'd showered with gifts to ease his guilty conscience. Staring at the boys, he realized with sickening clarity that he didn't recognize them anymore.
Drawing a shaky breath, Brent spoke with deliberate calm. "Shalane, take the boys back to London. Permanently. I'll provide monthly support, but the company shares are coming back to me. My attorneys will arrange everything."
Shalane sprang from the couch like a cornered animal. "You can't do this! Those shares are the boys' birthright!" Her voice turned shrill. "After all the years you ignored them, this is the bare minimum you owe them! I won't let you steal their future!"
Brent studied her with newfound clarity. Once she'd claimed all she wanted was their happy family - that the wealth meant nothing. Yet now her first concern was the money. Not fighting to stay. Not declaring her love. Just the damn shares.
The realization hit him like a punch to the gut.
Seeing his hardening expression, Shalane instantly switched tactics. "Brent darling," she cooed, "I only want what's best for our babies. They've endured enough shame growing up fatherless. If you strip everything from them, society will treat them like trash!"
Galvin, ever the quick study, immediately clung to Brent's leg. "Daddy, kids at school pick on me for not having a father," he sniffled with practiced innocence. "But now they all want to be friends since I'm a Ceppetelli heir! I don't wanna leave!"
Devin mirrored his brother, latching onto Brent's other leg like a limpet.
Looking down at his sons, Brent felt something inside him break. Not because they existed - but because Shalane had molded them into these manipulative miniatures of herself. Their childhood innocence had been sacrificed long ago.
Closing his eyes briefly, Brent delivered his verdict. "The boys stay with me. You're going back to London. Alone."
Shalane's mask slipped for just a heartbeat before she forced trembling lips into a pout. "Brent, I love you! I sacrificed everything for you - my career, my youth! I raised our children alone, waiting faithfully all these years! How can you abandon me now?"
Brent's gaze turned arctic. "I never asked for your sacrifices, Shalane. Never demanded you wait. Remember our original agreement?"
A flicker of panic crossed Shalane's face. Of course she remembered. She'd sweet-talked him into fatherhood, swearing she'd raise the children independently, never interfering with his marriage. She'd banked on time and maternal guilt wearing him down, certain he'd eventually discard his barren wife Camryn.
She'd never anticipated his devotion to Camryn. Never imagined that when Camryn left, he'd turn on her instead.

Forcing tears, Shalane dabbed at dry eyes and turned toward the exit. "Fine. I'll disappear forever. The boys are yours now. Enjoy parenting alone." With dramatic flair, she began her exit, shoulders heaving with faux sobs.
Right on cue, Galvin and Devin launched themselves at her, howling, "Mommy! Don't leave us!"
