Forced cesarean at eight months - danger could strike any moment.
When I resisted, Dad slapped me hard across the face. "You selfish brat! That's your sister! What's so wrong about saving her life? It's not like you can't have another baby later."
Andrew dropped all pretense, grabbing me by the throat. "Listen clearly, Miranda—Marianne collapsed this afternoon. She needs your umbilical cord blood now. You're going to that hospital today whether you like it or not."
"But Andrew, I'm carrying your child!" I choked out.
He scoffed. "Saving Marianne is this baby's only purpose. Otherwise, you don't deserve to be its mother." His icy stare sent me spiraling into despair.
"Enough talking!" Andrew barked. "Marianne's running out of time—tie her up and let's go!"
With my parents' help, he bound my wrists with rough rope.
Mom shoved me toward the door. "Move! If Marianne dies because of your stalling, you'll regret it!"
I dug my heels in, hooking my foot around the doorframe. Andrew kicked my leg viciously. "Keep resisting, and I swear I'll make you pay with your life."
The blow sent me crashing to my knees. Pain radiated through my body as my stomach cramped violently.
"Watch the baby!" Mom snapped at Andrew. "Hit her face if you must, but don't damage what's inside her."
Andrew nodded hastily. Then he and Dad yanked me up like a ragdoll, dragging me toward the elevator.
The doors pinged open—and out stepped Officer Burton, our neighbor who'd helped me catch a burglar months ago. Hope flared in my chest.
"Hel—!" Mom clamped a hand over my mouth.
"Feeling nauseous, sweetheart? We're getting you to the hospital now," she cooed.
Officer Burton frowned. "Everything okay here?"
Andrew flashed a calm smile. "Just some pregnancy complications. Need to get her checked immediately."
With my hands bound behind me and Andrew's grip like a vise, I could only plead with my eyes.
Mom whipped out her hospital ID. "I'm Dr. Garfield—OB-GYN. This is critical."
"Right, better hurry then," Officer Burton said, stepping aside. Andrew's shoulders relaxed visibly.
As the elevator doors closed, crushing my last hope, Mom dug her nails into my arm. "You little bitch! Trying to snitch on your own family? How heartless can you be?"
The sharp pain brought fresh tears—just as Dad's phone rang.
"Dr. Garfield! Marianne's spiked a fever—get back here NOW!"
