The moment Dad hung up the phone, his face darkened as he stared at my swollen belly.
"Marianne can't wait any longer. We're scheduling an emergency C-section the second we reach the hospital."
Andrew and Dad practically dragged me out the elevator before the doors fully opened.
"STOP!"
The sharp sound of running footsteps made me turn. Officer Burton stood behind us, his expression grave.
A spark of hope flickered in my chest.
"You dropped this." Burton jogged over, handing my ID to Mom.
"Thank you, Officer," Mom gushed while I struggled against my restraints.
"Mr. Burton—" My cry was cut off as Andrew clamped a hand over my mouth.
"Just hang on, Miranda," Andrew hissed, shoving me toward the car. "Hospital's minutes away."
The car door barely closed before Mom's nails dug into my arm. "One more stunt like that and you'll regret it."
Andrew blew through three red lights getting us to Mercy General.
They hauled me straight into OR-3. The sterile coldness of the surgical suite made my skin crawl. I thrashed as Mom loaded a syringe.
"This is just a simple procedure," she said, plunging the needle in. "We're taking what's rightfully Marianne's. You should be grateful to save your own sister."
The tranquilizer burned through my veins. They'd used a light dose—enough to dull the pain but keep me conscious. For the baby's sake.
"Strap her down," Mom ordered. Dad and Andrew manhandled me onto the table.
"This is illegal!" My voice cracked.
Mom scoffed. "I birthed you. That gives me every right."
Dad glared. "After everything we've done, this is how you repay us? Selfish brat."
Andrew yanked the restraints tighter. The ropes bit into my wrists.
"Sign this." Mom thrust a consent form at Andrew. He scrawled his name without reading.
My heart shattered watching these people—my family—prepare to butcher me.
"Andrew, maybe wait outside?" Mom adjusted her scalpel. "This won't be pretty."
He crossed his arms. "I'm staying until Marianne's medicine is secured."
Each word stabbed deeper than any blade. To him, I was just a walking organ farm.
No anesthesiologist. No monitors. Just Mom's shaky hands making the first incision. White-hot agony exploded as the blade parted flesh. I screamed until my throat shredded—but nobody flinched. Not even a glance.
"You'll... pay for this," I gasped between waves of pain.
Andrew opened his mouth to retort when Mom suddenly shrieked: "It's out! The baby's—" Her voice twisted into horror. "God... it's not breathing."
