"This can't be happening. I just saw her exam results today—the baby was perfectly healthy. How could it die?"
My mother's hands were slick with blood. She didn't even stop to help stitch me up, too frantic clutching the lifeless child in her arms.
Dad stormed over and suddenly struck Mom across the face. "You were the one who pushed to cut the baby out now! Now it's dead—what the hell is Marianne supposed to do?"
Mom clutched her cheek, then without hesitation, swung back at Andrew. "Did you hit her too hard earlier? Is that why she miscarried on the way here? Andrew, are you trying to kill my Marianne?"
Andrew's gaze flickered between the dead child in Mom's arms and my gaping wound. Then he lashed out, kicking her hard. "Who the hell do you think you are, hitting me? If you hadn't pressured us into this, my son would still be alive! That was my flesh and blood—give him back to me!"
Mom crumpled to the floor, groaning in pain. Dad lunged at Andrew, but before he could land a blow, Andrew seized him by the throat.
"You think you can lay a hand on me, old man? If you hadn't pushed me to tie Miranda up, my son would still be alive. If Marianne dies, it's on you—you're murderers!"
Dad's face turned purple as Andrew choked him, his eyes bulging, unable to speak.
Then Mom scrambled forward on her knees. "The baby's gone, but the cord blood—we can still use it! Hurry, get it to Marianne!"
Dad snapped back to reality, nodding frantically. Andrew immediately released him and yanked Mom to her feet. "You're sure?"
Mom shoved the blood into Dad's hands. "Go! Now! Save Marianne!" Dad bolted out the door.
Once they were alone, Mom exhaled shakily and turned back to me. "Since you helped your sister, I'll make sure you're stitched up properly."
I stared at her pathetic attempt at mercy and laughed coldly. "This is illegal. All of you will pay for this."
The needle in her hand stabbed into my flesh, her smile cruel. "Illegal? I saved my daughter. Who's going to arrest me?"
The pain nearly blinded me. "I'll make sure you all get what you deserve. You won't save Marianne."
Andrew grabbed my hand, his voice sickeningly gentle. "I know you're grieving, but this baby saved your sister. It served its purpose, didn't it? There'll be others. I swear—once Marianne's safe, I'll compensate you double."
I looked into his determined eyes and wanted to vomit.
