Before I could finish my sentence, the operating room door burst open.
"Freeze! You're engaged in illegal medical practice—come with us now!" Officer Burton stood in the doorway with his team, his voice cutting through the tense air.
"I knew something was off about you from the moment you left earlier. Why did you keep silencing her? Forcing her forward? Thank God I trusted my instincts and called the hospital—only to discover this pregnant woman wasn't even scheduled for delivery today."
Burton's gaze swept over my mother and Andrew with barely contained fury before landing on me. A collective gasp filled the room. There I was—no anesthesia, my abdomen sliced open, half my belly still exposed in a grotesque, bloody mess that turned stomachs.
"You're her family! How could you do this?" Burton's voice cracked with outrage as he forced himself to look away—only to spot the discarded infant's body on the floor. His face darkened. "Are you fucking human? That's your own daughter and grandchild!"
My mother didn't even flinch. She kept sewing my belly with clinical detachment, needle flashing. "Exactly—my daughter. What law says I can't operate on my own flesh and blood? The brat was already dead inside her. Not my problem."
Andrew, sweating bullets, jumped in: "My wife had a sudden medical emergency! No doctors were available! My mother-in-law stepped in to help—the stillbirth was just... just a tragic accident!" He raised a trembling hand like some bad courtroom drama.
"Besides," my mother sneered, stitching faster, "I'm a licensed physician. Andrew signed the consent forms as next of kin. So tell me, Officer—what exactly gives you the right to barge in here?" Her smirk said it all: she thought she'd outsmarted them.
Burton's jaw clenched. "You're monsters."
The hospital director stormed in, face purple with rage. "Marie! Performing surgery without anesthesia or assistance violates every protocol we have! Consider yourself terminated—effective immediately!"
"Since when do I need permission to save my own child?" My mother's voice dripped with venom.
With Herculean effort, I turned my head. Every word cost me: "You... dragged me here... without consent. Forced a C-section... to harvest cord blood... for your precious leukemia patient." A bloody cough. "You're butchers."
CRACK! Her palm connected with my cheek. "I gave you life, you ungrateful bitch! That means I own it!"
The room erupted. Nurses wept. Orderlies turned away. Even hardened cops blinked back tears.
"Enough!" Burton barked. "Cuff them both—NOW! Somebody get this patient proper care STAT!" As officers dragged my shrieking mother and whimpering Andrew away, a surgical team swarmed in—finally closing my wounds, checking vitals.
Through fading vision, I saw Burton standing guard like an avenging angel. For the first time in years... I felt safe enough to let the darkness take me.
