Gritting my teeth, I dragged myself up and began packing—just the essentials, just the things that really meant something.
After rummaging through my belongings, I found everything that mattered stashed away in my locked keepsake box inside the safe. And every single item inside was tied to Kevin. Faded origami cranes, their paper yellowed with time. A fountain pen from a competition I'd won years ago. A tiny athlete's medal, its ribbon frayed at the edges. Each one carried echoes of childhood—fragments of a past that felt both distant and painfully close.
And there, nestled among them, was the massive pink diamond—the one Kevin had dropped a hundred million on at an auction three years ago, right after my accident, just to see me smile.
The door flew open, snapping me out of my thoughts.
Valentina stepped inside, her pink princess dress swaying with every calculated step. But the sweet, wide-eyed act she put on for Kevin and our parents was gone. Her eyes swept over my room, cold and assessing.
"Tsk. Same parents, same blood, yet such different lives." Her voice was honeyed poison. "You got to grow up in luxury while I was kidnapped and left to suffer."
A soft, mocking laugh escaped her lips. "But don't worry—this unfairness won't last much longer. Valeria, you're finally going to feel what I went through."
She sneered, as if every hardship she'd endured was my fault.
I ignored her and bent to pick up the diamond—only for her to snatch it away effortlessly.
"A fake?" She let out a derisive chuckle before reaching into her collar and pulling out a delicate pink diamond necklace. "The real one's with me. Kev practically begged me to take it. Said he only wanted me to have the best."
My entire body shook. I lunged for it, but Valentina shoved me aside like I weighed nothing. I hit the floor with a hard thud.
"Pathetic." She clicked her tongue. "You really think you still have a chance with him? You're nothing now—just some cheap, discarded toy."
Then, with deliberate cruelty, she lifted her heel and pressed it down on my fingers—grinding slowly, savoring my pain.
A raw scream tore from my throat.
I tried to fight back, but before I could move, Valentina's eyes flashed. In one swift motion, she slapped herself, her nails leaving faint red marks on her cheek. Clutching her face, she let out a broken sob.
"Sister… did I do something wrong?"
I was still gasping from the pain when Kevin stormed in, his face dark with fury. He went straight to Valentina, cradling her face, his voice thick with concern.
"Valeria, have you lost your damn mind? How dare you hurt Tina?"
Our parents appeared in the doorway, their eyes locking onto Valentina's tear-streaked face. Without hesitation, they turned on me, their voices rising in outrage.
Not one of them stopped to ask what really happened.
