At around 6 PM, a horrific car crash sent a vehicle plummeting off the west cliff.
Police recovered a partially charred ID card from the wreckage—the last name Cortez was barely legible, the rest burned beyond recognition.
Kevin's face went deathly pale. Without a second thought, he lunged forward, grabbing the driver by the collar—ignoring the fact they were speeding down the highway.
"What the hell is this?! Tell me it's fake! Say it's fake, damn it!"
SCREECH—
The driver slammed on the brakes. Tires shrieked against asphalt, the sound tearing through the night.
The violent jolt snapped Valentina out of her drunken haze. She clutched Kevin's arm, groggy and panicked.
"Kev! We're on the damn highway! What the hell are you doing?!"
Horns blared behind them. Drivers shouted curses, flipping them off, but Kevin didn't hear any of it.
His hands shook violently as he fumbled for his phone. It slipped from his grip—once, twice—before he finally managed to dial my number. His breath hitched as the line rang, his entire body coiled tight with desperation.
Please pick up. Please just pick up.
But all he got was the same robotic voice, over and over:
"The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable."
"What the hell is going on?" His voice cracked. "Ria, don't do this to me. You promised—you said you'd be my bride in six months! You don't break promises!"
His entire body burned, blood roaring in his ears.
"Turn the car around! NOW!"
But they never made it to the crash site.
Stopping dead on the highway got them hauled straight to the police station.
Officers went through the motions—routine questions, stern warnings—but Kevin just sat there, hollow-eyed, repeating the same broken plea:
"The person at the west cliff… it's not Valeria Cortez. Right?"
Valentina had never seen him like this—completely shattered, like his soul had been ripped out.
And yet, watching him spiral over me, irritation flickered in her chest.
"Kev, relax! You know how my sister is—she loves pulling stunts for attention!" She scoffed. "She's been throwing tantrums since we were kids. Remember how she bullied me the other day? You and Mom and Dad all took my side. She's probably sulking somewhere, making you sweat over nothing!"
She'd fed him this line before. And every damn time, he'd believed her—over me—then turned around and treated her even sweeter.
But this time—
This time, Kevin's expression darkened. His gaze locked onto her, ice-cold.
"Then tell me." His voice was lethally quiet. "Where is she?"
His grip tightened around her arm, fingers digging in.
"Huh? Where is she, Valentina? SAY IT!"
She winced, trying to pull free. "Kev, you're hurting me!"
Just then, their parents stormed in. The Cortezes were out of the country, so his folks had come to bail them out instead.
The second they walked in, they saw Kevin—wild-eyed, gripping Valentina like a man possessed.
His father exploded. "KEVIN! What the hell are you doing?! Let go of her!"
His mother was just as furious. "This afternoon, you swore you'd treat Tina like gold! And now—this?!"
She swung her purse at his head.
Valentina threw herself in front of him. "Mom, Dad, if you're gonna hit someone, hit me!"
She expected him to soften—to pull her close, grateful for her sacrifice.
Instead, the second she touched him, something inside him snapped.
Kevin shoved her away hard. "DON'T TOUCH ME!" His voice was raw, ragged. "Ria hates it when I let you near me!"
From the moment he'd heard that news report, only one thought consumed him:
Something happened to her.
