In my past life, Mrs. Carter never recovered from the early death of her young daughter and fell gravely ill.
War raged at the border. The Carter men—father and son—marched off to battle. General Carter, already worn down to the bone, fell in combat. With morale crumbling, Andrew turned the tide, slaying the enemy commander—but not before sustaining fatal wounds himself. He died before reaching Scarlis.
When news of her husband and son's deaths reached Mrs. Carter, she collapsed against their coffins in grief. After that, the Carter line ended…
Such tragedy.
And so, the heroic young general became little more than a bittersweet footnote in history.
The Carters thanked me repeatedly before taking Nia home. General Carter had already summoned an imperial physician to their estate.
As they prepared to leave, I stopped Andrew.
"Ms. Watson, how can I help you?" He turned with his usual gentle demeanor.
"Take this." I handed him a small box.
Andrew opened it, eyebrows lifting at the thick stack of banknotes inside. "What's this for, Ms. Watson?"
"I know you and your father will soon deploy to the border. Consider this a token of support from the Watson family—I'd planned to send it to your estate, but today works just as well." I paused, then added, "I've also arranged for supplies—food, blankets, coal. If you need anything, contact the Watson Family Chamber of Commerce."
I held out a jade token.
His gaze flickered to my fingers before he took it, our hands brushing. We both stepped back instinctively.
"Your generosity won't be forgotten, Ms. Watson."
I smiled, resolved this time to do everything in my power to help him change his fate.
Years ago, I'd been the only girl awestruck by his archery at the hunt. Yet I'd buried my feelings, too bound by propriety. Loved as I was, I'd always chosen duty over desire.
But not in this life.
As Andrew turned to leave, I seized his sleeve.
"I'll wait for your victory." My face burned; I couldn't meet his eyes. It was the boldest thing I'd ever done. My fingers trembled, clutching the fabric like a lifeline.
