Max stood frozen, his stubborn stance making it clear he wouldn't budge unless I spoke to him.
Wendy seemed ready to relent, but I calmly interjected, "Mr. Charlie, there's no need for such closeness between men and women. Whatever you have to say can be spoken openly in front of Wendy."
My cold dismissal visibly stung Max. After an uncomfortable silence, he finally muttered, "Why are you with General Andrew Carter?"
Wendy's temper flared. "Mr. Charlie! You overstep your bounds. Miss Watson's marriage arrangements are her family's concern—certainly none of yours!"
Max suddenly snapped back to reality, bowing hastily. "My apologies... I only meant to express concern about General Carter."
Taking Wendy's hand, I stepped into the carriage without granting Max so much as a glance. That confirmed it—he'd been reborn too.
And if anything, his rebirth made me despise him more.
After everything he'd done to wrong me, he couldn't stomach seeing me happy with someone else. The man was truly despicable—selfish to his core.
An hour later, our carriage rolled through the gates of Watson Manor. I remained seated, dreading what awaited me. My family must have heard about today's events by now.
Would Grandmother rage? Would Mother and Father punish me? My stomach twisted with anxiety.
"Miss... aren't we getting out?" Wendy asked tentatively.
Drawing a deep breath, I squared my shoulders. There was no avoiding this. Gritting my teeth, I stepped down and marched straight to the front hall.
Sure enough, the entire family tribunal awaited—Grandmother, Mother, and Father all rising in unison as I entered. I dropped to my knees immediately.
"Grandmother, Mother, Father, today I acted recklessly and—"
Before I could finish, Grandmother pulled me up. "What nonsense is this? You've always been our perfectly behaved girl—that's what worries us! A Watson woman deserves to chase her heart's desire. And young General Carter? Fine character, handsome face, from that upstanding family where men don't take concubines? An excellent match!" Her voice was warm as summer honey.
"Couldn't have chosen better myself," Father chimed in.
"Seren, were you afraid we'd forbid this?" Mother added. "Had you told us sooner, we'd already be planning the wedding!"
I stared at them, dumbfounded. Instead of the scolding I'd expected, they were... delighted?
"But... aren't you concerned about Andrew going to—"
"Silly child," Grandmother patted my hands. "Do you think our family has no principles?"
"Royal merchants we may be," Mother said solemnly, "but we know right from wrong when it matters."
Father was already moving toward the door. "My future son-in-law's at the front lines—those supplies you sent won't be enough. I'll arrange more immediately."
Mother suddenly brightened. "And with only Mrs. Carter and young Nia at home, they must be lonely! I'll have them brought here at once."
As they bustled away, Grandmother and I stood alone in the suddenly quiet hall. Overcome, I threw my arms around her, tears spilling freely.
"Now now," she soothed, "these are happy tears! Andrew will return to you safely—that's certain."
From that day forward, the Carter women became part of our household.
