The next day, Herbert stuck to my side like glue.
The powerful CEO of a major corporation was playing the role of a doting nanny—even peeling grapes and feeding them to me.
That evening, he reserved the most exclusive high-altitude restaurant in the city for our date.
The view from the window was breathtaking.
Then, Herbert pulled out the necklace he'd designed himself—Love-Samantha—and fastened it around my neck. A rare ruby glimmered under the soft lighting.
His gaze was tender as he whispered, "You're stunning, darling."
Just as he leaned in to kiss me, his phone buzzed on the table.
Stella. His secretary.
He answered with barely concealed irritation. "I told you—I'm with my wife today. Whatever it is, it can wait."
But then his voice dropped, his expression shifting to something like panic. "Fine. I'll be right there."
Hanging up, he turned to me, guilt written all over his face. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. It's urgent. I'll make it up to you."
When he tried to kiss me again, I turned my head slightly. "Don't let her wait."
He rushed off, leaving me alone with the lavish spread of food—dishes I once loved, now tasteless as sawdust.
My reflection in the window looked exhausted. The dazzling necklace around my throat felt like a joke.
I stood to leave, but my wedding ring slipped off.
Groping in the dark, I watched helplessly as it rolled away, disappearing into a crack.
Maybe this was fate.
Herbert and I were like that ring—slipping further apart.
On the way home, my phone buzzed. A photo of Herbert, smiling softly at a pregnancy test.
Then came the videos.
Him and Stella—in his car, his office, a hotel room. Lingerie, toys, condoms scattered everywhere.
The messages kept coming:
"One call, and he dropped you for me. Open your eyes, Samantha—who does he really love?"
"He says you're boring in bed. That I'm fun."
"The one who isn't loved is the outsider. Leave before I make you."
Every moan, every gasp, clawed at my nerves. My hands shook so badly I could barely hold my phone.
A crushing pain swallowed me whole. I buried my face in my hands and sobbed.
Herbert didn't come home until midnight.
I pretended to be asleep on the couch.
He carried me to bed, cradling my icy feet against his chest to warm them.
In the dark, I whispered, "Do you love me?"
He stiffened. Then his arms tightened around me, hot tears soaking my shoulder.
"I'm sorry I kept you waiting," he choked out. "Never doubt how much I love you. You're my whole world."
I turned to face him. His eyes, bright with tears, held mine—just like they had years ago when he'd shielded me from the world.
I used to believe in forever. But forever changes.
Smiling, I brushed his cheek. "I love you, Herbert."
And I did. I'd always love the boy I met at eighteen.
But I wouldn't stay.
He hugged me like I might break. "Darling… maybe in a few years, we could adopt?"
I knew whose child he meant.
"Sure," I said.
It didn't matter. I'd be long gone by then.
