Zuhra’s House – Study Time (1)
In a living room bathed in the golden hues of sunset, Brigadier Imran Ahmed sat on a wide leather armchair, one leg crossed over the other, reading a newspaper with thoughtful eyes. On the side, Zuhra’s mother sat on the floor with their two children – Amir and Ruhan – helping them with their assignments. The TV hummed in the background, but no one paid attention; each person was absorbed in their own task.
Zuhra emerged from the kitchen, dressed in a simple gown with a light scarf over her head. In her hands were a jug of water and a glass cup. She quietly approached her father, set the jug on the small side table, and poured him a drink.
He accepted it without lifting his eyes from the paper. Just as she turned to leave, he calmly looked up and asked:
Brigadier:
“Where are you going?”
Zuhra stopped, turned slightly with a faint smile and replied:
Zuhra:
“To Baba’s room — I want to study. Exams start tomorrow.”
He set the newspaper aside and looked at her with an expression of pride and joy.
Brigadier:
“Go on. See? Zuhra is staying focused.”
Zuhra lifted her head slightly but said nothing. She turned and walked to her room. In the living room, Brigadier Imran continued watching his wife and children with a heart full of calm — a sense of peace, love, and hope for his daughter’s future.
Zuhra’s Room – Evening
She entered her room, tired and burdened. Inside, she found Marwa sitting near the desk, staring at a textbook with anxious eyes. Marwa was struggling to grasp the exam material, but she felt completely lost — she had missed too many lectures.
Zuhra sat beside her, though her mind was consumed with thoughts of Kamal — his love still tangled deep in her heart. She remained silent for a while before realizing she had to find a way to cope.
She quietly picked up her phone and dialed Rushna.
As soon as the call connected, Zuhra’s voice broke with helplessness:
Zuhra:
“Rushna, I’m in deep trouble. I don’t understand anything. If I fail this exam, my father will finish me. Please… help me.”
There was silence on Rushna’s end for a moment, then she replied:
Rushna:
“Calm down, Zuhra. Don’t panic. Let’s meet early tomorrow before the exam starts. I’ll help you revise.”
Zuhra let out a heavy sigh, thanking Rushna and feeling a faint glimmer of hope rise within her chest.
