The moment Lily made her announcement, the entire room erupted into chaos as everyone scrambled to search for her missing ring.
Between frantic glances under furniture, I could hear her dramatic muttering: "That was a birthday present from Adam - a three million dollar ring! I'll die if it's really gone!"
I didn't know what kind of scheme she was pulling, but my only thought was to get the hell out of there. Just as my hand touched the doorknob, Lily materialized in front of me like some kind of vengeful ghost.
"Rachel, if you've got nothing to hide, let me check your bag," she demanded, her sickly sweet tone dripping with fake concern.
Before I could react, she yanked my purse right out of my hands. The contents went flying - lipstick, keys, receipts scattering across the floor. And there, glinting mockingly among my belongings, was the damn ring.
My stomach dropped as I locked eyes with Lily, seeing the triumphant gleam in hers. "You planted this," I whispered.
The room had gone dead silent. Every pair of eyes burned into me with undisguised contempt. Worst of all was Adam's expression - that look of utter disgust like I was something he'd scraped off his shoe.
"I didn't take it!" The words sounded pathetic even to my own ears.
Lily snatched up the ring, turning on the waterworks. "This was my grandmother's heirloom!" she wailed. The Oscar-worthy performance continued: "After everything we did to give Rachel a second chance... and she repays us like this? I can't believe she'd stoop this low for money."
The client's CEO looked ready to explode. "Adam, consider our deal terminated!" He stormed out with his entire team in tow.
I moved to follow, to explain - only to be met with Adam's palm cracking across my face. The sting was nothing compared to the ice in his voice: "I pulled strings to get you out of prison, and this is how you repay me? Stealing like some common thief?"
His words hit like knives. After everything we'd been through, he'd believe her over me? Had he forgotten why I went to prison in the first place?
With shaking hands, I shoved my phone at him. "Go ahead. Call the cops."
Adam just stared at me, his jaw clenched. That endless silence told me everything. Finally, he scoffed, "Pathetic," before tenderly sliding the ring back onto Lily's finger and leading her away.
Alone in the wreckage, I gathered my things with numb fingers and headed straight for the airport. As I sat in the fluorescent-lit terminal drafting my resignation, my phone buzzed with Adam's termination notice:
"Stay the hell away from the office. You're suspended indefinitely pending review."
A bitter laugh escaped me. Without hesitation, I texted him a photo of our signed divorce papers along with:
"Congratulations to you and Lily. May you live happily ever after - just remember to finalize our divorce first, or I'll have you arrested for bigamy."
The moment I hit send, my phone lit up like a Christmas tree with Adam's frantic calls. But I was done listening.
