Adam was silent on the other end of the line, clearly thrown off balance.
"Eric?"
"What the hell did you do to Rachel? If you've got a problem, take it up with me!"
Hearing this, Eric shot me a dry smirk.
He probably found Adam's fake concern as laughable as I did.
I sighed and took the phone back, my voice flat.
"I came to Eric on my own."
Adam's disbelief was instant.
"Have you lost your damn mind, Rachel? You went to him? What the hell does that make me look like?"
Even now, all he cared about was his own reputation.
What about me?
He'd stomped all over my dignity without a second thought.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"Since you won't give me a fair shot at work, I had to find it myself."
I was about to hang up when Adam stopped me.
"You're doing all this because of me and Lily, aren't you?"
Then, his tone turned smug.
"Let me ask you—you saw last night's video, didn't you? Why didn't you freak out? Why act like nothing happened?"
It clicked.
So he was behind that video.
He'd been waiting for me to lose it, to beg him to reconsider.
Pathetic.
I wasn't some naive girl playing dramatic games anymore.
Every move I made was calculated—not some cheap ploy to win him back.
I let out a cold laugh and answered evenly,
"You need to understand something: I'm serious about the divorce."
"Whatever's going on between you and Lily? That's your business, not mine."
Silence.
The line went dead quiet.
My patience ran out, and I hung up without another word.
Eric, who'd been watching the whole time, chuckled.
"I always knew that guy was a piece of work, but I never pegged him for this much of a bastard."
"You took the fall for him—three years in prison—and he repays you by cheating?"
I took a sip of coffee and shrugged, signaling I didn't want to dwell on it.
From what I knew, Eric was one of the good ones.
He'd built his company from the ground up without a cent from his family.
Now that he'd made it, he was helping young entrepreneurs get their start.
His rivalry with Adam had started over some project years ago.
Even though they operated in different cities, the competition had been brutal—both sides took hits.
After a while, I suggested touring the company.
Walking through the office, I was impressed. Eric ran a tight ship, but the vibe was way more relaxed than my last job.
He even offered me double my old salary.
"Adam doesn't know talent when he sees it. I do."
I smirked.
Back when I'd graduated, I'd had offers from multiple companies.
But for the sake of "love," I'd made the wrong choice.
After the tour, I rented an apartment nearby.
That night, I treated the whole department to dinner—a chance to break the ice early.
"Rachel, the perks here are solid. Let's crush it together!"
"Yeah, and thanks for dinner, Rachel!"
Glasses clinked, and the mood was light.
Midway through, worried I'd be too out of it later, I slipped away to settle the bill.
But just as I handed over my card, another slid in beside mine.
"Eric?"
