The bombshell post came straight from Lily's own account, instantly catapulting both Eric's company and me into the public eye.
No sooner had the post gone viral than Lily showed up at my apartment, smug as a cat that got the cream. "Tell me, Rachel," she sneered, "what client in their right mind would sign with an ex-con?"
I just smiled, slow and knowing. "Funny you should ask, Lily. You know I did time, but do you know whose fault it was?"
Her perfectly sculpted eyebrows knitted together—clearly, she hadn't seen this twist coming. Watching her confidence crumble was sweeter than dessert.
"Honestly, I planned to take this secret to my grave," I continued, pulling out the damning agreement where I'd taken the fall for Adam. "But you just had to push me."
As Lily scanned the document, her face went through five shades of pale. If this got out, Adam's golden boy image would be toast—and his little lapdog would go down with him.
"This...this can't be real," she stammered, those doe eyes welling up with crocodile tears.
"Please don't release this," she begged, suddenly all sweetness. "I'll delete the post immediately. The project's yours. I—I was wrong..."
I yanked the agreement back. "I'll think about it," I said coolly, then shut the door in her face.
When she started pounding like a madwoman, I called security without hesitation. Sure, it caused a scene, but the project sailed through just fine.
During our department's victory celebration, I slipped out for air—only to find Adam blocking the hallway with a tearful Lily in tow.
"Apologize to Rachel. Now." His voice could've frozen hell.
To my shock, Miss High-and-Mighty actually bowed her head. I just shrugged. "Relax. I don't do regrets, so your dirty laundry's safe with me."
But as I moved to leave, Adam grabbed my wrist. "I'm not worried about me," he said, voice rough. "I'm worried what this could do to you."
My head snapped up. Since when did Adam care about anyone but his precious company? The man who'd sacrificed me without blinking?
Seeing my disbelief, he rushed on: "Lily means nothing—I fired her. So..e home with me?"
Those eyes I knew so well held a plea I'd never seen before. But the truth was simple: the man standing here wasn't the one I'd loved.
I wrenched free. "That ship has sailed, Adam. I'm happy now—really happy. Just...stay out of my life."
His face darkened like a storm cloud. "That's bullshit!" he exploded. "Neither of us is happy apart! I haven't slept in weeks—every time I reach for you and you're not there..."
His voice cracked. "One more chance, Rachel. I swear I'll be the man you deserve. We can fix this."
