Lisa was a knight. A serious, disciplined, and well-trained protector of the royal family.
Jennie was a princess. A walking disaster, a menace to society, and Lisa's biggest headache.
Lisa had fought in battles. She had survived duels, assassins, and even a giant, fire-breathing lizard once (okay, maybe it was just a very angry chicken, but it felt like a dragon). But nothing, absolutely nothing, had prepared her for this:
"Sir Lisa, you are to be assigned as Princess Jennie's personal bodyguard," the King had announced.
Lisa, in her twenty-three years of life, had never felt true terror until that moment.
The first day of guarding Jennie was hell. The moment Lisa entered Jennie's chambers, she was greeted with an airborne pillow to the face.
"WHO DARES ENTER MY ROOM WITHOUT PERMISSION?!" Jennie yelled dramatically, standing on her bed like a warrior about to charge into battle.
Lisa, stunned, slowly removed the pillow from her face. "I'm Sir Lisa. Your new bodyguard."
Jennie squinted at her. "You're tall."
Lisa blinked. "Yes?"
Jennie gasped, covering her mouth. "You must be a GIANT."
Lisa sighed. "I'm just—"
"I knew it. Father has finally hired a giant warrior to protect me!" Jennie grabbed Lisa's arms and inspected her muscles. "ARE THESE MAGICALLY ENHANCED?"
Lisa groaned. "Princess, I'm just an ordinary—"
"NO WAY. You probably eat ten cows a day to maintain this strength!" Jennie poked Lisa's biceps in fascination. "Do you even need a sword? Or do you just—punch people to death?!"
Lisa wondered how fast she could resign.
Keeping Jennie inside the palace was impossible. She had the energy of ten children on a sugar rush. On Monday, she climbed out the window to sneak into the marketplace. Lisa had to chase her down while dodging flying cabbages.
On Tuesday, Jennie bribed the palace guards with cookies to let her out. Lisa had to drag her back kicking and screaming.
On Wednesday, Jennie faked an illness, moaning, "Lisa, I'm dying... I must go outside one last time..." Lisa did not fall for it.
By Thursday, Lisa was tired. She chained the palace gates shut.
By Friday, Jennie had somehow befriended a group of pirates and was halfway onto a ship before Lisa tackled her into the ocean. Lisa dragged a soaked Jennie back to the palace. "DO YOU WANT ME TO DIE FROM STRESS?!"
Jennie grinned. "Aww, you care about me!"
Lisa threw her into her room and locked the door.
Complaining to the Queen about Jennie's behavior was useless. The Queen simply smiled. "Oh, Lisa dear, that just means she likes you!"
Lisa choked on her tea. "WHAT?"
"Jennie has always been... passionate," the Queen explained. "When she likes someone, she makes their life miserable."
Lisa blinked. "That sounds... terrible."
The Queen laughed. "Oh, you'll get used to it!"
Lisa stared into the distance. She did not want to get used to it.
Lisa was popular with the royal guards. She was strong, kind, and easy to talk to. Jennie hated it. One day, Lisa was sparring with another knight, Rosé, when Jennie suddenly appeared and threw herself onto Lisa's back.
Lisa almost dropped her sword. "PRINCESS?!"
Jennie wrapped her arms around Lisa's neck. "You belong to ME!"
Lisa sighed. "I am your bodyguard, not your pet."
Jennie pouted. "Same thing."
Rosé smirked. "Lisa, your princess is very... clingy."
Jennie glared. "BACK OFF, ROSÉ. She's mine."
Lisa facepalmed. "Jennie, I am not a—"
Jennie bit Lisa's shoulder.
"WHAT THE—DID YOU JUST BITE ME?!" Lisa yelled.
Jennie smirked. "Now you're marked."
Lisa gave up on life.
One day, at a royal banquet, a duke proposed to Jennie. Lisa expected Jennie to reject him immediately. Instead, Jennie stood up, pointed at Lisa, and declared, "I'M ALREADY ENGAGED!"
Lisa choked on her drink. "WE ARE WHAT?!"
Jennie grabbed Lisa's hand and showed it to the entire ballroom. "SEE?! SHE GAVE ME A RING!"
Lisa looked down. It was her own ring, which Jennie had stolen from her pocket. The King raised an eyebrow. "Is this true, Sir Lisa?"
Lisa turned to Jennie. The princess winked. Lisa sighed, pinched the bridge of her nose, and said the words that would change her life forever—
"...Yes. We're engaged."
Lisa regretted everything. Jennie was worse as a fiancée than she was as a princess. She demanded Lisa carry her everywhere. She canceled all meetings so Lisa would only spend time with her. She threatened anyone who flirted with Lisa. One night, as Lisa lay in bed, Jennie crawled under the covers.
Lisa groaned. "Jennie, go to your room."
Jennie snuggled closer. "Nah. I like it here."
Lisa sighed. "Why are you like this?"
Jennie smirked, wrapping her arms around Lisa. "Because you're mine."
Lisa buried her face into her pillow and questioned every life choice that led her here.
A few months later, the royal wedding took place. Lisa stood at the altar, fully aware that she had been tricked into this marriage. Jennie stood beside her, grinning smugly. When the priest said, "You may now kiss the bride," Lisa sighed and said, "Might as well go all in."
Jennie beamed as Lisa leaned in. The second their lips met, the entire ballroom erupted in cheers—but Lisa was too busy mentally accepting her fate. When she pulled back, Jennie smirked up at her. "See? I told you. You're mine now."
Lisa exhaled deeply. "Yeah, yeah. Just... promise me you'll behave now that we're married?"
Jennie giggled. "No promises."
Lisa quickly realized that being married to Jennie was even worse than being her knight.
For one, Jennie was clingy to an unbearable level.
If Lisa so much as left the room, Jennie would appear out of nowhere and yell, "WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING, HUSBAND?!"
Lisa once tried to sleep alone in her own chambers. Jennie responded by dragging her mattress into Lisa's room and sleeping on top of her.
Lisa was convinced Jennie was part cat.
Lisa regretted everything.
One day, Lisa sat on the palace balcony, staring at the sunset and contemplating her life. Jennie walked up behind her and wrapped her arms around her waist.
Lisa sighed. "Jennie, why are you like this?"
Jennie grinned. "Because I love you, obviously."
Lisa's heart did an embarrassing little flip. She turned to face Jennie, shaking her head. "You could have just said that from the beginning, you know?"
Jennie laughed, tilting her head. "Where's the fun in that?"
Lisa sighed. "So, I was doomed from the start, huh?"
Jennie beamed. "Yup! You were always meant to be mine."
Lisa rolled her eyes but smiled despite herself. "Fine," she muttered, pulling Jennie closer. "I guess I can live with that."
Jennie giggled before tackling Lisa to the floor in excitement.
Lisa groaned. "I take it back. I want a divorce."
Jennie gasped. "TOO BAD. YOU'RE STUCK WITH ME FOREVER."
Lisa buried her face in her hands as Jennie snuggled into her. And just like that, Lisa realized that maybe being trapped with Jennie wasn't so bad after all. Even if it was absolute chaos.
