Jennie was fourteen when she was told she would now be accompanied by a personal bodyguard practically everywhere she goes. She was furious when her parents told her as would any teenager at the stage where privacy and time alone was gold.
"I don't need protection, father!" A young and frustrated Jennie tells him.
"You're the heir to the throne, darling, and therefore you must be protected at all costs even if we aren't aware of any threats yet," he responds coolly.
"If that was the case, you would've given me one ages ago! You're- You're only doing this because Kai snuck in, right?!?" Jennie continued her tantrum, so enraged that she stupidly blurted out the name of her secret-but-not-anymore boyfriend.
"Hmm," the King hums, making Jennie start to fidget with her hands. "Actually, we only waited until now because we wanted to make sure your bodyguard was properly trained and ready, but I guess that gives me another reason to assign you one since it's apparently easy for someone to sneak into your room." The King glances at his head of security knowingly, wordlessly scolding them for allowing such a thing to happen before looking back at his daughter, whose face was now beet red.
Jennie knew she lost the fight after her slip-up, but that still didn't stop her from being mad at the new intrusion. She crossed her arms and looked away when she heard her father call for the bodyguard.
"Kim, come introduce yourself," he says and Jennie makes sure to keep her head to the side, refusing to look at her unwanted companion.
I bet he's a stupid, old, ugly, idiot-
"Yes, your Majesty."
Jennie's thoughts come to a halt at the sound of a feminine voice and she can't help but look at who the owner of the voice was. When she does, her jaw nearly drops.
The person now in front of her looked nothing like Jennie had expected. To start, she thought it was going to be a man, probably in his mid-20s. She never thought she'd be face-to-face with a girl who looks like she's the same age as her and a pretty one at that.
The girl across from her bows first before speaking again, "Hello Princess Jennie, my name is Kim Jisoo and I swear to honor my duty to ensure your safety and happiness. I will always be here to lend you a hand and protect you at any and all costs."
Jisoo bows respectfully once again and the two lock eyes when she comes back up. A second or two passes before Jennie breaks eye contact to look at her father.
"Father, you can't be serious," Jennie nearly laughs in disbelief. "She looks like she's my age and you're trying to tell me that my life is in her hands?!" She points to Jisoo.
"As a matter-of-fact, she is one year older than you," the King says simply. "Your mother and I thought it would be best for your bodyguard to be around your age so they would feel like your friend and so that you can be more comfortable around them too. We believe growing up together will strengthen your trust with one another as well. And if you're worried about her skills, she's been training for years and has even bested some of my strongest guards. She's more than qualified to protect you, my dear."
Jennie just huffs her chest in exaggeration, "Whatever." She sends a quick glare at Jisoo. "Just don't bother me, okay?" As she leaves, she rolls her eyes at the new sound of footsteps that will follow her for years.
As time went by, her parents' hope of the two being friends never came to any real fruition. This was due to a mix of Jennie continuously rejecting the fact that she has a bodyguard and that Jisoo was often way too focused on her job to ever let loose. It also didn't help that Jennie's request of not being bothered didn't hold up either.
"AAAHHH GET OUT!" Jennie screams when the door to her room bursts open and Jisoo appears with high alert etched on her face. Jennie was so caught up with her emotions switching from fear to anger that she forgot that she had pushed Kai off of her bed. She silently starts to wish that the boy stays quiet.
"I thought I heard something, your Highness," Jisoo says casually as she starts to walk, looking around to survey the room.
"What did I tell you about coming into my room?" Jennie questions, hoping to make Jisoo stop moving around.
"To knock first, but-"
"Exactly! So, get out!" Jennie reaches back to grab and throw one of her pillows at her bodyguard. In the beginning, she'd never do such a thing, but she eventually realized that Jisoo wouldn't be able to retaliate so being hit with a soft cushion was something that the bodyguard was used to by now.
"Hey!" Jisoo pouts once hit, but as expected remained unfazed as she continued her check. "I'm just making sure you're alright and I'm not-"
"Leaving until it's all clear blah blah blah," Jennie mocks. Soon after, however, she starts to panic once Jisoo begins approaching the other side of her bed.
"Jisoo, it's all clear. You don't need to look anymore," Jennie tries after moving her eyes frantically as if conducting a search herself, but Jisoo squints her eyes in suspicion and keeps walking. "This is an order! I order you to leave!"
"All due respect, I don't take orders from you, your Highness," Jisoo smirks and Jennie hates it because she knows the girl was right. The Princess falls back on her bed with a grunt when Jisoo finally takes notice of the figure lying on the floor on the other side of the bed. "Well, well, well. Fancy seeing you here again, huh Kai?"
Jisoo aggressively grabs the boy to make him stand and starts pulling him out of the room, making Jennie take notice, "Jisoo, stop being so rough with him!" She immediately hops off of her bed and trails behind Jisoo, yelling at her to let her boyfriend go as they make their way to the castle doors.
"Dude, c'mon!" Kai genuinely tries to fight her off, but it was to no avail with Jisoo's grip locked on tightly. It was moments like this that made Jennie realize just how strong Jisoo was. (She wouldn't say it outloud, but it also made Jisoo look very hot every time.) Once they reach the doors, the bodyguard hands him to the castle guards.
"Look who's here again gentlemen. You know what to do," Jisoo says and the two other guards bow to Jennie before giving the bodyguard respectful nods and leading Kai out of the castle.
"Goodnight, Jennie! I'll see you soon!" Kai yells out as the castle doors close and Jennie waves just before the doors are completely shut.
"I'll take you to your room, your Highness," Jisoo says as she extends her arm for Jennie to hold. But Jennie just pushes it away with a scoff.
"I hate you," Jennie starts to walk towards her room. "I don't know why you keep treating him like this every time. He didn't do anything wrong."
"He snuck in after hours... again," Jisoo follows.
"Who cares?! We've been dating for two years now. We do this all the time so I don't know why you can't just leave us be!" Jennie stomps up the stairs.
"Considering that it has been two years, he should know by now that he isn't allowed in your room after curfew," Jisoo challenges. "So, I don't trust him."
"Well, I do," Jennie turns to face Jisoo as soon as they arrive at the door to her room, blocking her bodyguard from following inside.
"Well, you shouldn't," Jisoo holds her hands behind her back.
"And why not?" Jennie raises an eyebrow.
"Because you shouldn't be with someone who can't follow rules."
"So what? Are you saying that I should be with someone like you?" Jennie challenges in hopes to catch the other girl off-guard and to her amusement, it works.
"I-uh-of course n-not," Jisoo stutters until she just clamps shut.
"Exactly," Jennie smiles devilishly. Then, to end off her revenge, she leans up to whisper in Jisoo's ear, "And life would be boring if you don't break the rules every once and a while."
Once she pulls back, she has to hold in her laughter when she sees Jisoo as pale as ever.
"Goodnight, Jisoo," she says with a fake smile as she closes the door.
"G-Goodnight, your Highness."
Jisoo was posted outside of Kai's house when the door to her left was suddenly yanked open and Jennie ran past her towards the car.
"Your Highness?" Jisoo quickly catches up and opens the car door to let Jennie sit inside. "What happened?"
Jisoo was confused seeing that the two of them had only arrived a few minutes ago since Jennie had insisted on coming to surprise her boyfriend the morning of his birthday.
"After f-four years... He's- He's cheating on me," Jennie sniffles with her head buried in her hands. "T-There was a girl in his bed when I w-walked in."
Jisoo's grip on the car door tightened.
"Jennie! Wait!"
Jisoo doesn't even have to turn around to recognize Kai's voice. "I'll be back," she says coldly.
"Jisoo, don't be foolish!" Jennie tries to grab her bodyguard, but Jisoo easily evades her outreached hands and turns around, now approaching the boy with clenched fists.
"Whoa, whoa, hold on, Jisoo," Kai starts as he holds out his arms to keep the girl from coming any closer. "Just let me talk to her-UGH!"
Jisoo shakes off her right hand after connecting her fist to the side of Kai's face. She leans down and hovers over the fallen boy, who is now holding his left cheek, ready to strike again when she feels someone lightly grip her arm.
"Please, stop," Jennie's small voice seems to break Jisoo's trance. "I want to go home."
At that, Jisoo stands up slowly, her eyes never leaving Kai's as if telling him to stay down. She flattens and dusts off her suit before Jennie, who is still holding on to her arm, drags her back to the car. The bodyguard's adrenaline was still pumping that it took her a few moments into the drive to realize that 1) she was sitting in the back with the Princess even though she normally sits in the passenger seat and 2) that Jennie had started to inspect her now bruising hand.
"What were you thinking?" Jennie asks quietly as she gently holds Jisoo's hand while looking at it.
"I'm sorry, your Highness. I don't know what came over me," Jisoo gulps, her heart racing with the contact.
"It's fine. He deserved it anyways," Jennie sighs. "I guess you were right."
"About what?"
"I... I shouldn't have trusted him."
Jisoo immediately took notice of how Jennie's shoulders had slumped and that a small frown was now evident even though she could only see Jennie's side profile. The bodyguard wanted to console the Princess, but she wasn't exactly sure how to go about it seeing that their relationship had always been odd. So, she does what she thinks she can.
"I'm sorry."
"What ever could you be sorry for?" Jennie asks with no malice in her voice, but rather in genuine confusion.
"I wasn't able to uphold my duty of ensuring your happiness, your Highness," Jisoo says. It was fairly simple, but she hopes it got her message across.
She can't tell if she said the right thing, seeing that Jennie didn't say anything for the rest of the trip. But she clearly wasn't completely off the mark since Jennie's finger began to lightly trace random lines on her bruised hand.
